This position is located in the UN News Services Section I, which is part of the News & Content Branch of the News & Media Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The News Section produces daily news and feature stories, magazine programmes, special series and creates audio content using live and recorded audio from meetings and events, and multimedia pieces for the UN News digital platform, incorporating audio and video elements, as well as social media content. Through these products UN News provides daily and weekly content in nine (9) languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Hindi, Kiswahili and Portuguese). Incumbent reports to the Chief of the News Service Section I and the Deputy Director, News and Content Branch. This is a project-based position that is available as soon as possible for a period of six months with the possibility of extension. Any further extension is dependent upon the extension of mandate and the availability of funds.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Associate Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Tracks, researches and analyzes information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns conducted in Hindi.
  • In consultation with others, identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches for promotion of Hindi News content, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.
  • Carries out in-depth and ongoing analysis of the performance of UN News and the performance of the Hindi News content specifically to optimize audience-focused communications.
  • Assists with streamlining and strengthening distribution practices across all languages and formats to ensure broader and engaged audiences for key messages and organizational priorities.
  • Monitors performance across platforms of Hindi News content as well as distribution via Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, and Mailchimp and responds to requests for reports, ranging from annual reporting to intergovernmental bodies to real-time thematic and other reports drawing on Google analytics and social media metrics. Prepares reports that tie into the broader reporting requirements of the UN News platforms.
  • Identifies key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintains working relationships with the same.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in communication, journalism, international relations, public relations, business analytics or related field is required. A first level university degree, in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).
