Org. Setting and Reporting

This temporary position is located in the Department of Global Communications (DGC) and its worldwide network of information centers. The Incumbent reports to the Chief of Education Outreach, and works under the close supervision of the Managers of the Model United Nations and the United Nations Academic Impact initiatives. Functional responsibility for these profiles rests with the DGC. This position is available effective 5 August 2024 for 6 months with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Associate Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Tracks, researches and analyzes information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns.
  • Drafts/compiles a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, digital etc.), of information communications products for target audiences, to include press releases, media packets and reports, decks, briefings, video clips, newsletters, websites, social media etc.
  • Organizes the clearance, production and distribution of information material; conducts photo and graphic research.
  • Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initials drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, digital reports and communications.
  • In consultation with others identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.
  • Identifies key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintains working relationships with the same.
  • Organizes or participates in the organization of conferences, seminar, press briefings, interviews, etc.; prepares briefing materials and talking points for senior officials prior to their participation in such events.
  • Responds to a variety of inquiries and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.
  • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data analytics and visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

  • A first-level university degree in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field is required.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, communications, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area. (none if successful YPP or P-1 with a related degree). (No experience is required for candidates who have passed a United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination.) Experience organizing events is required. Experience managing website content and social media is desirable. Experience working with young people and externals is desirable. Experience working with external partners, Foundations, and donors, is desirable. Experience creating an outreach strategy is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Fluency in French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
