Associate, Raptor Rehabilitation

Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Raptor Conservation, the Associate, Raptor Rehabilitation is responsible for the day-to-day care of the Audubon Center’s permanent resident collection, and the care and evaluation of raptor patients under rehabilitation. This individual will also co-lead R+ training for ambassadors and resident raptors, provide support in the Raptor Trauma Clinic, and oversee volunteers in the aviary and rehabilitation programs.

The Associate, Raptor Rehabilitation will maintain and cultivate relationships with state and federal agencies, wildlife rehabilitators, veterinarians, researchers, supporters, the general public, and other organizations and individuals to help broaden the Center’s base of support and involvement with Audubon. This position is a full-time, 40 hours a week role from Sunday-Thursday 8:30 am-5:00 pm at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey.

Compensation:

$23.77 – $24.00 / hour

Essential Functions

• Responsible for raptor rehabilitation activities including husbandry of all resident raptors (30+ permanent residents) including feeding, cleaning, and enrichment.
• Communicate with supervisor on evaluations for birds ready for release including flight conditioning and behaviors; coordinate and schedule release times and locations including baby returns.
• Provide the best possible care for raptors under rehabilitation including scheduling long-term rehabilitation cases with falconers for evaluation and coordinating transfers to other rehabilitation facilities for care as needed.
• Work with Clinic staff to support well-being of patients, residents, and transfers.
• Working with the senior bird care team, design and retrofit construction of living conditions for raptors, including mew enclosures, perching, ponds, substrate, feeding platforms, nest boxes all compliant with USDA standards for training, care and safety.
• Responsible for managing the Center’s enrichment program for permanent raptor residents.
• Train and supervise volunteers in all rehab areas including bird handling, feeding (adults and babies), enrichment, diet, equipment, and cleaning.
• Communicates and collaborates with the Clinic team on special rehab cases, medical plans, and special needs for birds under rehabilitation.
• Responsible for food inventory and ordering, storage, preparation and diets.
• Track and update medical records, notes and procedures using RaptorMed. Maintain and update food charts, daily logbooks, monthly reports and project lists.
• Clean and organize areas in the service building so that equipment can be found for medical care, medication, imping, leather, electronics, and maintenance equipment in compliance with USDA regulations.
• Co- leads the Center’s bird training programs using R+ training protocols.
• Responsible for site maintenance and special projects for aviaries and rehabilitation areas.
• Participate in Audubon activities, fund raising and special events as necessary.
• Maintain positive working relations with staff, volunteers, veterinarians, donors, and general public.
• Maintain open communication between departments to better support operations at the Center.
• Answer phones, assist with rescues and/or releases when needed, provide information to general public. Other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years of experience required. An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.
• Minimum 2 years raptor care including medical care, rehabilitation, and husbandry preferred.
• Minimum 1 year experience with R+ training for raptors for educational ambassadors and resident well-being required.
• Must be adaptable, have excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, be a team player and have the ability to work with limited resources.
• Experience in training and leading volunteers.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Publisher.
• Valid Florida Driver’s License is required.
• Some evening work or emergency response may also be required.
• Must be able to work outdoors in the natural Florida environment, transport items of up to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation and remain stationary for long periods (5-6 hours daily) with or without accommodation.
• Experience with carpentry, using power tools, and performing light repairs is required.
