The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, Mailman School of Public Health is seeking an Associate Research Scientist to serve as the Project Director and the primary statistical analyst at Columbia for the Rakai Orphans in Communities (ROC) Project. The ROC Project assesses the impact, measurement, and policy issues at the intersection of orphanhood, combination HIV prevention, HIV risk among youth, and family health using the Rakai Community Cohort Study (RCCS), established in 1994.

The successful candidate will have doctoral-level training in public health epidemiology and statistics, and substantial prior experience conducting public health research with complex, population-based data. We particularly seek applicants with a track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals. Knowledge of research on HIV is encouraged but is not required for this position. Geographic expertise (e.g., prior research experience either in East Africa or Uganda is useful but not required.  Scientific work in Uganda is conducted in English.

Responsibilities:

  • Take primary responsibility for quantitative analyses for Aims 1 and 2 of the ROC project.
  • Coordinate research activities and integrate findings from the lead co-investigators for Aim 3 qualitative research and Aim 4 economic research.
  • Coordinate research activities with investigators at ROC institutional partners.
  • Play a lead and supportive role in the development, writing, submission and revision of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Define and lead analyses for additional papers within the scope of the ROC project.
  • Represent the project at organization meetings and scientific conferences.
  • Assist in the preparation of new grant proposals in global health, HIV, and AYA health.
  • Prepare research presentations at US and global scientific meetings.
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of student research assistants.
  • Coordinate key activities related to the ROC study including new data collection, preparation of progress reports for NIH, IRB renewals, etc.).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent degree in Public Health or other related field.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to manage a team of researchers at multiple institutions preferred.
  • Advanced research skills in data analysis, data presentation, and communication.
  • Excellent writing skills commensurate with scientific writing for leading journals in HIV research and global health.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Commitment to global health, social justice, and youth development and health.
