Position Summary:

The Future Society (TFS) is seeking two or more highly motivated individuals to join our European AI Governance team. These new hires will play a critical role in scaling up our European AI governance activities, including advisory and advocacy work, international coordination efforts, and policy research. We are open to candidates at either the Associate or Senior Associate level, depending on skills and relevant experience. These roles will report to Emily Gillett, Director of European AI Governance.

About The Future Society:

The Future Society (TFS) is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating in the United States and Europe with the mission to align AI through better governance. We develop, advocate for, and facilitate the implementation of governance mechanisms designed to ensure AI systems are safe and uphold fundamental values. TFS takes a systematic approach to developing projects that address institutional barriers in AI governance: undergoing prioritization and impact-planning exercises to define promising AI governance projects, conducting applied research and collective intelligence exercises to design select projects, and building coalitions and advocacy campaigns to deploy projects with high impact.

Through our work, we collaborate with intergovernmental organizations, governments, companies, academic institutions, think tanks and other civil society organizations. You can learn more about our recent projects on our Resources page.

Responsibilities:

Please note that specific responsibilities will vary depending on whether a successful candidate joins TFS at the Associate or Senior Associate level. Briefly, Senior Associates are expected to operate with a greater degree of autonomy than Associates, including managing critical stakeholder relationships independently, attending external events (including undertaking speaking engagements) without direct supervision, and producing publication-ready written work. People management experience is also highly desirable for Senior Associates.

  • Drive TFS’s policy engagement in Europe by researching, preparing, and disseminating AI policy memos and other outputs, and building and managing relationships with policymakers, civil society groups, and other relevant actors.
  • Convene and manage communities of relevant stakeholders by organizing and participating in workshops, working groups, joint written outputs, events, and conferences (including managing contacts and invitations, event content, and other written material).
  • Work with TFS’s leadership to map and build coalitions of stakeholders to advocate for and support implementation of our policy positions in Europe.
  • Represent TFS at national and international AI policy forums, events, and workshops with multi-stakeholder AI technical and policy experts.
  • Senior Associates will likely manage staff at the Associate or Analyst levels and will be expected to treat people management as an essential area for skills development.
  • Support organizational needs as required including fundraising, grant proposals, impact planning and assessments, and strategic communications.
  • Participate in team-wide strategy discussions, including during work retreats.

Preferred Qualifications:

There are no “perfect candidates,” and we strongly encourage you to apply even if you do not feel that you have all of the preferred qualities listed below.

Associate, European AI Governance:

  • Commitment to TFS’s mission of aligning AI through better governance.
  • Demonstrated understanding of AI governance issues, ecosystem, political economy, and the incentives of actors and decision makers. Basic understanding of general-purpose AI technology, technical and operational elements, and value chain.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to produce concise, accurate, and well-structured written work with minimal support.
  • Strong policy research and analysis skills, including a clear understanding of editorial and research best practices.
  • Strong time management skills, including the ability to effectively balance competing tasks and projects.
  • Proven ability to work independently, responsibly, reliably, and asynchronously in a remote-first environment.
  • Previous experience in Brussels and knowledge of EU AI-related lawmaking and governance efforts are desirable.
  • Full professional working proficiency in English; French or German language skills are desirable but not required.

Senior Associate, European AI Governance:

  • Commitment to TFS’s mission of aligning AI through better governance.
  • Exceptional understanding of AI governance issues, ecosystem, political economy, and the incentives of actors and decision makers. Nuanced understanding of general-purpose AI technology, technical and operational elements, and value chain.
  • The ability to autonomously manage relationships with key stakeholders, acting as their primary point of contact at TFS and independently providing valuable insights and guidance.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to independently produce publication-ready work.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute novel ideas and research to the field of AI governance. Exceptional policy research and analysis skills, including a clear understanding of editorial and research best practices and the ability to support others in developing and applying these best practices.
  • Strong time management skills, including the ability to effectively balance competing tasks and projects.
  • Exceptional ability to work independently, responsibly, reliably and asynchronously in a remote-first environment.
  • Previous experience in Brussels and knowledge of EU AI-related lawmaking and governance efforts are desirable.
  • People management skills and experience are highly desirable but not required. Please note that a successful candidate at the Senior Associate level will be expected to demonstrate a committed interest in, and to prioritize, development of people management skills.
  • Full professional working proficiency in English; French or German language skills are desirable but not required.
