The EIB’s investment advisory team is looking for (Associate/Senior) Investment Officers to oversee the EIC Fund’s growing portfolio. The EIC Fund is the venture capital investment arm of the European Innovation Council, which was launched under Horizon Europe to support deep-tech and disruptive innovation in areas such as Health-tech, Life-Science, Greentech, Clean-tech, Agri-tech, ICT, Quantum, Space-tech, Engineering and many others. The EIB acts as an Investment Advisor to the Fund, and the role of the (Associate/Senior) Investment Officers in the team is to analyse, structure, negotiate, execute and monitor Fund’s direct equity and quasi-equity operations, following bespoke procedures and reporting standards. In addition, the (Associate/Senior) Investment Officers take an active part in supporting the development of internal procedures and processes in relation to the investment advisory services to the EIC Fund.

OPERATING NETWORK
The successful candidate is expected to, after initial guidance from senior officers in the team for more junior candidates, autonomously manage all aspects of the investment, liaising with the rest of the EIC team members. The candidate will report to the Head of Unit and will collaborate, whenever required, with EIC Fund stakeholders (European Commission, EISMEA, EIC Fund Board etc.) and other teams of the Bank. The (Associate/Senior) Investment Officer will need to adapt to bespoke procedures developed for the purposes of the EIC Fund operations outside of the EIB standards and reporting systems and contribute to the continues development of such procedures.

The EIC Fund is the equity investment arm of the EIC programme with a mandate to invest between EUR 1.0m and EUR 15.0m in equity to selected European start-ups in the deeptech space. The current total portfolio of companies managed in the EIC Fund entails approximately 370 companies and is expected to grow to 500-600 companies over the following years. EIB acts as the investment adviser to the EIC Fund.

Accountabilities:

Business development:

  • Analyse and execute individual equity and quasi-equity investments with start-ups, as well as small and medium-sized companies within EU 27 and Horizon Europe associated countries for potential investment from the EIC Fund.
  • Cooperate with venture capital and private equity funds, industrial investors (incl. CVCs), family offices, private investors, financial advisors, sector/industry associations and other stakeholders of the EIC Fund and EIC Accelerator Programme.
  • Monitor closely your respective sectors and geographical coverage.
  • Represent EIB and EIC Fund at conferences, help organise promotional and market awareness raising events.
Investment process:
  • For investments under EIC Fund take the full responsibility of leading the appraisal process and executing of equity and quasi-equity operations, in line with specifically agreed procedures and templates. For more junior candidates initially support senior staff in the team while growing in the job to take full responsibility over time.
  • Undertake financial and commercial due diligence, draft investment recommendations and other relevant approval documents in cooperation with the relevant external stakeholders, services providers and internal services, if and where applicable, and facilitate the approval process.
  • Develop deal structures and negotiate term sheets for initial and follow-on investments.
  • Lead the contract negotiation process with the investees, legal advisors, co-investors, and other relevant third-party service providers as applicable.
  • Negotiate additional documentation such as shareholder agreements, subscription agreements and other relevant documentation related to the investment as may vary from case-by-case with external legal counsels.
Disbursement and monitoring process:
  • Manage the fulfilment of applicable conditions precedents and coordinate disbursements in line with the established procedures in the EIC Fund.
  • Follow-up the development of the transactions: update files and relevant internal systems to ensure all monitoring information is up to date, check the fulfilment of conditions precedent, maintain up-to-date reporting information etc. Proactively manage the portfolio of investments in your responsibility.
  • Maintain communications and cooperation with your portfolio companies through periodical and ad hoc status updates, and through representing the EIC Fund vis-à-vis the investee companies in its constitutional bodies such as shareholders’ and board meetings in accordance with the EIB internal guidelines and EIC Fund rules.
  • Actively manage any post-investment requests and events from the companies in your portfolio, including exists, in line with the applicable procedures and decision-making policies of the EIC Fund.
  • In the event of contractual modifications and other post-investment events (e.g. loan conversions), provide timely support for structural modifications and contract negotiations in cooperation with key external stakeholders in order to maintain the quality of the investment portfolio.
  • Provide periodic valuations on existing operations in your portfolio in line with the established valuation policy of the EIC Fund.
Product development:
  • Support in further development of the EIC processes, procedures and policies as applicable.
  • Develop new products or work on new product features based on identified market gaps, if applicable.
  • Work with partner institutions such as the European Commission, NPBIs and other IFIs.
  • Launch and monitor ex-ante market studies and market consultations for third party services, if applicable.
Qualifications:
  • University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor) preferably in Finance/Business, Engineering, Physics.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience in the financial sector and in an investment role, preferably in venture capital/debt, private equity, M&A, High Yield/Sub -Investment Grade Debt and/or Mezzanine Financing.
  • Previous entrepreneur/founder experience, specific industry knowledge in sectors targeted by the Fund, as well as from board of directors representations will be considered a plus.
  • Strong technical expertise in financial analysis/modelling/valuation and experience in equity and quasi-equity investment structuring and portfolio management.
  • Good computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office as well as other relevant applications and financial databases.
  • Additional certifications related to investments will be considered a distinct advantage.
  • Strong passion towards venture capital investments, strong team-mentality, and motivation for personal development in the job a must.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French, with a good command of the other. Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage.
