Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’
focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a
national and global leader in higher education. We create and
foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and
philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine;
strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors,
alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and
patients.

 
Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work
model which includes four different work modalities. This role has
a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 4 days per
week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where
the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees
who travel on university business can count those days towards
their onsite days.
 
As a direct report to the Vice President of
Development and Alumni Relations and member of the Executive Team
for Development and Alumni Relations, the Associate Vice President
will manage the Associate Deans of the Bloomberg School of Public
Health, School of Nursing, Carey Business School, School of
Education, School of Advanced International Studies, and the
Executive Director who oversees International Programs, the Berman
Institute of Bioethics, the Center for Talented Youth and future
development office of the School of Government and Policy. The
incumbent will work closely with their direct reports to develop
and implement multi-year strategies and goals for assigned units.
The overarching goal is to deepen engagement, grow the University
donor base, and increase giving across the units of oversight.
 
Specific Duties and
Responsibilities: 

 

  1. Manage the leaders of the development and alumni relations
    programs for the Bloomberg School of Public Health, School of
    Nursing, Carey Business School, School of Education, and the School
    of Advanced International Studies.
    • Provide oversight of the Associate Dean in each school to help
      guide the work plan goal setting, pipeline building, strategies,
      and progress toward fundraising goals.
    • Partner on prospects and visits with Associate Deans, as
      needed, to enhance relationship building and donor engagement.
    • Work with the Associate Deans on their respective Advisory
      Boards and leadership counsels. Attend meetings, strategize, assist
      in building relationships, and identifying new members.
    • Assist with strategies for alumni relations and development
      communications.
    • Partner with the Deans on hiring and management of the
      Associate Deans.
    • Serve as counsel to the Deans and Associate Deans on
      advancement-related topics.
    • Drive personal and organizational accountability to the stated
      objectives each fiscal year.
  2. Manage an Executive Director who has responsibilities for
    supervising the leaders of International Programs, the Berman
    Institute of Bioethics, the Center for Talented Youth and future
    development office of the School of Government and Policy.
    • Provide oversight and help guide the work plan goal setting,
      pipeline building, strategies, and progress toward fundraising
      goals.
    • Drive personal and organizational accountability to the stated
      objectives each fiscal year.
    • Work in partnership with the Executive Director to build a
      vision for the creation of a development office for the newly
      established School of Government and Policy.
    • Provide strategic thinking and partnership as needed.
  3. Serve as a key member of the campaign planning process, in
    conjunction with the Vice President Associate Vice President of
    Campaign Strategy and Engagement, and the Executive Team. Leverage
    existing structures and resources to support strategies, approaches
    and tracking of cross-disciplinary signature fundraising
    opportunities identified for this campaign.
  4. Partner with direct reports to establish campaign goals, and
    decision making related to campaign management and completion.

 
 

Desired Leadership Capabilities:

  • Ability to plan strategically, organize, and establish
    objectives and priorities while ultimately achieving goals in an
    aggressive organizational environment.
  • Aptitude in understanding and articulating academic goals while
    working collaboratively with academic leadership, faculty,
    students, alumni, and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience in working in a cross-disciplinary
    manner in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Management, motivational, and programmatic consensus building
    skills with development professionals and academic staff.
  • Ability to mentor and manage development professionals and
    administrative staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to use of information technology and the management
    and understanding of data systems.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Ten or more years of progressively responsible fundraising
    experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher education fundraising experience strongly
    preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage major and principal gift strategy and
    solicitation.
  • Strong management skills and demonstrated ability to lead a
    team of individuals towards a common goal.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with impact.
  • Experience in multifaceted campaign planning and implementation
    strategies.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
