Asst. Director for Internal Communications

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences seeks a creative, experienced, team-oriented Assistant Director for Internal Communications to design and lead the internal communication efforts of the Dean’s Office. This person will develop an internal communications plan for the school’s strategic plan, relevant reports, events, memos, and websites directly tied to the Dean and the KSAS Dean’s Office. This person will report directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Strategy and Chief of Staff, with a dotted line to the Senior Director for Marketing and Communications.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as internal communications lead for Krieger School.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive internal communications strategy to support the KSAS Dean’s Office and its strategic priorities.
  • Plan, create, oversee, and edit internal communications strategies aimed at keeping Krieger School faculty, staff, and students informed about important initiatives, goals, and events.
  • Contribute to school-wide reports documenting the school’s activities.
  • Work with members of the Dean’s Office to create and write collateral around internal initiatives.
  • Ensure the efficiency and efficacy of communications between school leadership and faculty, staff, students, and other members of the Krieger School community.
  • Follow established university branding standards in all communications.
  • Liaise with members of the Krieger School communications team and the Dean’s Office.
  • Write clear and effective content for internal audiences.
  • Pivot writing styles based on the format, message, audience, and purpose.
  • Lead effort to develop a cohesive internal communications strategy that builds community and positions the school as a vital part of the university.
  • Develop and maintain an internal communications calendar, ensuring that communications activities are coordinated.
  • Plan, curate, edit, and send Arts & Sciences Weekly, a newsletter that goes out every Tuesday during the academic year highlighting the work and expertise in the Krieger School.
  • Manage all print and digital collateral related to the Krieger School strategic plan.
  • Curate content from websites, social media, and news media to amplify the Krieger School’s strategic plan across multiple platforms.
  • Contribute to internal reports, such as the Krieger School self-study, faculty handbooks, briefings, and internal email messages.
  • Advise and work with the communications team to write remarks and messages for the dean and other leadership.
  • Write materials for the Dean’s Office such as all-faculty and staff meeting invitations.
  • Provide support to the Sr. Director for Marketing and Communications.
  • Plan and create templates for internal crisis communications announcements such as building closures, COVID-19 updates, and other emergencies.
  • Edit content and manage editors for a number of internal websites and Sharepoint sites.
  • Hire and manage external vendors as needed.
  • Interact with communications experts across the university on various issues and best practices.
  • Execute strategies for cross-divisional communications efforts between the Krieger School and other divisional communications offices.
  • Ensure consistent use of university and Krieger School brand standards across all projects.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong writing, organizational, copy-editing, and digital skills.
  • General familiarity with Associated Press style.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with multiple audiences.
  • Ability to write clear, concise copy for various mediums.
  • Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with school and divisional partners and leadership.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and cultural responsiveness.
  • Experience using a content management system (WordPress) and email marketing platforms such as Staff base or MailChimp.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to translate sometimes complex information into clear, concise messages for a variety of audiences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five to eight years of related experience with at least five years of internal communications.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
