The CU Denver Political Science Department seeks to sensitize students to the essential questions of politics and life, and to catalyze informed and creative civic engagement in pursuit of a more just and humane world. Beyond its teaching mission, the Department seeks to create, discover, and apply knowledge to improve the health and well-being of Colorado, the nation, and the world. Our Political Science Department values interdisciplinarity approaches to teaching, research, and creative activities and our department record of excellence includes playing a key role in college interdisciplinary programs like International Studies and Legal Studies. 

We have long hosted the University Fourth World Center for the Study of Indigenous Law and Politics, and the New Directions Center focused on public, non-profit, and community leadership. We have a robust record of engagement in civic affairs, which includes an Urban Citizen service-learning program and a CU at the Capitol legislative internship program. Our department offers study abroad programs to South Korea and Berlin and participates in the CU Denver’s International College in Beijing program. Our faculty has a strong record of academic and community-service accomplishment, winning multiple university and community awards for research, teaching, and service.

The successful candidate will be rostered as a full-time tenure-track assistant professor. This position comes with responsibilities in teaching (40% of time), research (40% of time), and service (20% of time). The teaching load is 2/2 (four courses an academic year), at both the undergraduate and graduate level. This position will be responsible for teaching foundational courses in comparative politics and international studies as well as courses within the candidate’s particular subfield. In addition to advancing the mission of the Political Science Department, the successful applicant will be expected to help support and teach classes relevant to CU Denver’s International Studies major/minor.

Applicants should have areas of expertise in the political economy of the “Global South.” Particular geographic areas of interest are: Latin/South America, South Asia, or Sub-Saharan Africa. We seek to identify candidates with expertise in one or more of the following subfields: International Development, Indigenous Peoples’ Politics, Public Health, Human Rights, Labor and Migration, Colonialism and Neo-Colonialism. The Political Science Department seeks candidates who expand our understanding of how colonialism, settler colonialism, neocolonialism, neoliberalism, globalization and/or militarism affect daily life across the world, and who can highlight the innovative solutions to global and local challenges that are emerging out of traditionally marginalized communities. Why Join Us:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Political Science, International Studies, or closely related field, from an accredited university, with areas of expertise in one or more of the following fields: Political Economy of the “Global South” (Area expertise in Africa, Asia or Latin/South America), Indigenous Peoples’ Politics, International Development, Public Health, Colonialism/Neo-Colonialism, Human Rights, Labor, and/or Migration.
  • College level teaching experience
  • Record of scholarly achievement, such as journal or book publications, conference presentations, and/or published journalism

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience mentoring or working within historically minoritized or underrepresented communities as this relates to one’s research, service, and/or teaching
  • Record of effective teaching, as demonstrated by such things as student evaluations and peer teaching reviews.
  • Experience implementing innovative pedagogies, such as community-based learning, online teaching, simulations, internships, and collaborative learning approaches.
  • Experience with community engagement and/or international development work.

  • Demonstrated allegiance and ability to embrace and advance equity and inclusion.
  • Strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and success.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, including minority and international students.
  • Ability to communicate in a positive and effective manner, across various modalities.
  • Team-orientation, commitment to community, creative and collaborative problem solving.

Compensation and Benefits 

The salary range for this position has been established at $78,000-$84,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. 

Some moving and other startup expenses may be provided as part of a negotiated startup package.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
