Offer Description
Your responsibilities
The ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) is part of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, providing the tracking of charged particles arising from proton-proton collisions. Maintaining the optimal performance of the SCT is vital for the physics analysis program of ATLAS, and the successful candidate is expected to take a leading role in SCT operations as well as in offline performance studies to ensure SCT continues to operate with maximum efficiency.
The person will be required to learn SCT operational requirements and procedures quickly including both hardware and software (data acquisition and detector control system), and be expected to lead SCT performance studies. The candidate should have experience with online systems, have demonstrable programming and software management skills (including C++, python, gitlab, JIRA), and ideally should have experience of working with tracking detectors for particle physics experiments. He or she will be expected to work closely with colleagues in the SCT collaboration, to supervise students or qualification tasks in SCT, and be willing to work shifts (including possibly nights and weekends) where necessary.

About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
