Starting date:

Job description:
The Atmospheric Dynamics group at the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research – Troposphere Research (IMKTRO), led by Prof. Dr. Peter Knippertz and Prof. Dr. Andreas Fink, works towards a better understanding of weather systems and improved predictions, with a geographical focus on tropical Africa. Our research is based on numerical modelling – mainly with the Icosahedral Nonhydrostatic model ICON – in combination with conventional meteorological observations (incl. satellite data) and measurements from field campaigns. In recent years, we have built a strong network with colleagues from mathematics and computer science to explore method of artificial intelligence for forecasting. The group of currently 15 members is very international with English as the main every-day language and well connected to institutions in Europe, Africa and North America. For recent publications and projects see www.imk-tro.kit.edu/english/5874.php .
With this opening, we are looking for a creative, ambitious and team-oriented early-career researcher interested in developing an own academic profile at the interface of meteorology, mathematics and computer science with the aim to thematically and methodologically enrich the research portfolio of the Atmospheric Dynamics group. A particular interest is in machine learning applications to dynamical and forecast problems, including aspects of weather systems in a changing climate. Your tasks are:
- Conduct own research, (co-)supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students, submit proposals for third-party funding and interact with other researchers in IMKTRO’s Helmholtz programme “Changing Earth”.
- Support other group members in scientific and technical aspects of their work.
- Assist the group leader in organizational tasks.
- If desired, contribute to teaching in the BSc and MSc programs of Meteorology and Climate Physics.
- If desired, work towards a habilitation.
We offer a dynamic work environment at one of Germany’s largest research institutes for Atmospheric Sciences, ranked #1 in Germany in the Shanghai Ranking of Academic Subjects. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to participate in international conferences, to obtain advanced training and to spend extended periods of time with cooperation partners abroad or to participate in field campaigns. KIT is one of the largest institutions of research and higher education (9,400 employees and 25,000 students) in natural sciences and engineering in Europe. KIT actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and explicitly encourages applications from women and persons with diverse backgrounds. Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered if suitably qualified.
This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest scientific organisation.
