Avian Field Technician (Hourly)

The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking a field technician to assist with ongoing bird and plant-related research. Duties will include conducting point counts for Illinois birds, using playback recordings to detect focal species, nest searching and monitoring of focal species, assisting in wetland bird capture and banding, entering data, and assisting with report preparation for the contracting agency.  This position will be 40 hours per week and will be based out of the Chicagoland area in Illinois. Fieldwork will primarily take place in the greater Chicago region.  

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in ornithology, conservation, ecology, or related field. Alternate degree fields may be considered depending on the nature and depth of experience as it relates to this position.
  • Must have a minimum of one season of fieldwork experience and one or more years of experience identifying birds migrating along the Mississippi Flyway by sight, song, or call. Field recordings will be provided for study before the start of the field season.
  • Experience conducting point count surveys and playback surveys for wetland bird species, capturing birds using mist nets, wetland bird nest searching and monitoring, conducting vegetation surveys, using GPS, navigating using maps, collecting, entering, and managing data, writing scientific reports, and motivation and willingness to learn are all preferred.
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license is required.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Knowledge of bird identification for migratory and resident Illinois birds, or willingness to learn.
  • Mist-netting experience.
  • Effective communication with supervisor and other scientists.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and in groups.
  • Sound judgment when working independently, and when interacting with members of the public, landowners, and Forest Preserve District staff.
  • The ideal candidate will be able to follow instructions and protocols with attention to detail, have a strong work ethic, and have a positive attitude toward the rigors of fieldwork.

Environmental Demands

Will require working in adverse field conditions in wetlands (heat, humidity, water, biting insects, etc.), and travel (including to and from research sites) throughout the state of Illinois. Working irregular hours and overnights. The position involves hiking while carrying equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. Applicant must have a valid U.S. driver’s license and be able to operate large vehicles including large pick-up trucks. Must be willing to work a flexible field schedule that may change depending on the weather.

Salary: $17.00 – $19.00 per hour, depending on experience                                      

Available:  May – October 2024.
