Avian Surveyor Position

5-10 field biologists are needed to conduct surveys for a threatened seabird, the Marbled Murrelet, on private and government-owned forest near Roseburg, Willamina, Philomath and Eugene OR. The work includes: conducting early morning audio-visual surveys in mature and old-growth coniferous forests following a strict protocol, establishment of survey routes, collecting habitat data, conducting surveys, transcribing data and reporting to your supervisor. Applicants should be comfortable navigating and working alone in the forest under low light conditions and inclement weather. Some survey stations are located on roads, while most stations require hiking 15 min – 1 hour each way through steep and rugged terrain. Hiking into survey stations will be done in the dark as surveys start 45 minutes before sunrise.

For the project we will provide a weeklong mandatory full survey certification training, housing, 4WD work vehicle and all field equipment. Mileage reimbursement will be provided to biologists using their own 4WD high clearance, reliable vehicle on the project.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Use a GPS, compass and other navigational tools to locate and flag survey stations.
• Conduct audio-visual surveys from 45 minutes before sunrise to 1 hour and 15 minutes after sunrise.
• Collect and transcribe data accurately and legibly.
• Safely operate 4WD vehicles and navigate well maintained forest roads.
• Other related work as needed.

Basic Qualifications:

• Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife biology, or natural sciences required.
• 1 seasons of field experience, including experience conducting field research or surveys on birds desired.
• Western bird identification skills.
• Comfortable hiking and surveying alone in the dark.
• Strong orienteering skills using compass, GPS, map and aerial photos.
• Capable of hiking off trail in steep and brushy terrain and in inclement weather.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work alone and in teams.
• Clean driving record (DMV driving record submission required).
• Normal vision and hearing (hearing test required).

Salary:

$1,440.00 – $1840.00, paid every two weeks (equivalent of $18.00-$23.00/hour). Pay rate is subject to applicable experience with the most consideration given to previous marbled murrelet survey experience. Expected 40 hour work weeks.

Housing will be provided for this position in the project area.
