Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in Bogota in the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMC). The Aviation Safety Assistant reports to the Mission’s Aviation Safety Officer.
Responsibilities
Within the limits of delegated authority, the Aviation Safety Assistant will be responsible for performing the following duties: – Promotes safety awareness to all mission aviation-related staff with safety briefings, bulletins, alerts, and consolidated reports. – Reviews aviation occurrences and safety hazards and occurrences encountered, Finding and Hazard Registers (FiHRs), and other issues including monitoring and compliance of DPO/DOS Environmental and Waste Management policies/objectives in the area of aviation that need to be brought to the supervisor’s attention. – Provides support in drafting vendor performances and carrier assessments reports and prepares Aviation Safety Monthly report. – Provides support with the preparation Safety Performance Indicators, risk assessment indicators, identifying aviation safety hazards, and advises the supervisor. – Participates in the implementation of Aviation Emergency Response Plans, assists with the exercise’s preparation, and assists with the coordination with local authorities. – Assists in organizing the Mission Aviation Safety Council. Prepares minutes and assists in the preparation of agenda, invitations, the production, and distribution of documentation, note taking and preparation of minutes of meetings. – Maintains the reference library and other pertinent aviation-related documents, ensuring they are current, including International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), informs senior Assistants and professional officers of technical problems concerning the submission and registration process and assists in resolving these problems. – Completes the Aviation Safety surveys (safety assurance and safety risk management guides from the (iAviation Safety platform) in accordance with the requirements of the Mission Aviation Safety Program. – Drafts routine communications related to the Aviation Safety Program. – Logs reports in the safety reporting data bases (iAviation Safety platform) as required. – Ensures that all UNVMC policies are applied and followed thoroughly across all processes, including adherence to UNVMC code of conduct and ethics and integrates a gender-sensitive approach in all functions. – Performs other duties as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
Professional pilot license or aeronautical engineering license or air traffic controller’s license is desirable. Certification in Aviation Safety Management Systems is desirable. Technical or vocational certificate in aviation-related activities (air operations, air traffic control, maintenance, dispatch, etc.), or graduation from equivalent military establishment or military flight/air traffic control training is required.
Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of technical experience in air transportation or air traffic control operations, aviation safety or aviation engineering of which at least one year should be of comparable experience at the international level is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three (3) for candidates who possess a first level university degree or higher. Aviation Safety qualifications are desirable. Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in both English and Spanish is required.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
