UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, Opportunity

With over 850 indigenous languages, and one of the most ethnically diverse populations, widespread poverty and gender inequality make it hard for many children to realize their rights.  In Papua New Guinea (PNG), UNICEF’s works effectively both ‘upstream’ (with governments) and ‘downstream’ (at the grassroots level) to carry out its mission through a programme of cooperation jointly developed with the government guides our work in the country.

How can you make a difference?

1.      Background of the internship:

The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the Organization does — in programmes, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life — in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions — her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens — addressing inequity — not only will give more children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

Located in the Southwest Pacific, Papua New Guinea (PNG) is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, including mountain glaciers, humid tropical rainforests, swampy wetlands, and coral reefs. In addition to harboring abundant natural resources such as gold, copper, oil and natural gas,    PNG boasts 7% of the world’s biodiversity. Agriculture, fishing, community forestry, and small-scale mining are primary livelihood activities in rural areas. PNG is undergoing economic and social transformation and with such a highly dispersed and remote population with 87% of Papua New Guineans living in rural areas, poverty, poor infrastructure, corruption, safety and security concerns, among other factors, all heighten the vulnerability of the local population.

PNG has some of the worse WASH related indicators globally. According to the 2022 Joint Monitoring Programme Report, in 2020, around 45 per cent of people had basic water services; another 2 per cent had limited services (an improved facility but it was not functioning at time of survey), 22 per cent used unimproved services and 30 per cent had no service, defined as surface water. Disparities between    rural and urban areas continue to be extreme. In 2020, 39 per cent of rural residents versus 86 per cent of urban residents used basic drinking water services.
