Beamline scientist for the Structural Biology group

ESRF

tendersglobal.net

The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

Serial Synchrotron Crystallography is a rapidly emerging technique in which the ESRF has plays a leading role thanks to the Extremely Brilliant Source upgrade (https://www.esrf.eu/about/upgrade). ID29, the new beamline for serial and time-resolved macromolecular crystallography at room temperature, delivers an unprecedented flux density, allowing the recording of diffraction data from micron-sized samples in a few microseconds. Microfocus ID23-2 beamline offers one of the highest flux densities in the world in combination with high throughput sample handling and the ability to be a testbed for new delivery devices. Finally, microfocus MASSIF-3 beamline offers similar flux densities to ID23-2 with the additional feature of having been adapted to serial injection experiments. Beamline operations are supported by a dedicated sample preparation laboratory where the most suitable crystal delivery systems can be prepared and characterised prior to experiments.

As beamline scientist the main duties will be:

  • Develop new methods and instrumentations for time resolved and serial crystallography for the Structural Biology beamlines
  • Collaborate with the ESRF software engineers for the development of new tools for data acquisition and data analysis
  • Develop a strong research programme and participate in the in-house research projects in collaboration with the Structural Biology laboratory and the other beamline scientists
  • Operate the time resolved and Serial crystallography beamlines and support the user programme as local contact
  • PhD in chemistry, physics, biophysics, biology or closely related science
  • Experience with large scale facility instrumentations development and commissioning
  • Strong background in X-ray crystallography and serial crystallography
  • Strong interest in new method development
  • Ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)

5-year contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
