Bioacoustics Technician

The Meadowlands Research & Restoration Institute (MRRI) is a dedicated team of scientists who work to monitor, restore, and preserve the delicate ecosystems of the New Jersey Meadowlands. Located in northeastern New Jersey, the Meadowlands are home to a wide diversity of imperiled flora and fauna nestled within an urbanized landscape.

MRRI is seeking a seasonal, part-time bioacoustics technician to support the staff Wildlife Biologist in collecting, organizing, and analyzing audio data. The goal of the project is to assess the distribution, abundance, and habitat associations of locally and regionally rare wildlife species including Atlantic Coast leopard frog, saltmarsh sparrow, and tricolored bat.

The successful applicant will assist with field data collection using Wildlife Acoustics hardware as well as data organization and analysis using a variety of software. The successful applicant may also participate in a variety of other field and office related tasks depending on their interests and experience. These may include, but are not limited to, threatened and endangered species field surveys, vegetation assessments, and geographic information systems analyses.

Schedule: Weekdays up to 29 hours/week, May – August 2025  

Required Education: Current or recently graduated student at an accredited 2 or 4-year institution.

Experience and Attributes:

  • Experience identifying birds of the Northeastern United States by sound OR with identifying bats of the northeastern United States by spectrogram and manually vetting large datasets
  • Interest in bioacoustics and soundscapes research; experience working with Wildlife Acoustics hardware and various software including Kaleidoscope Pro, BirdNET, SonoBat, etc. preferred
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to work on projects with limited oversight
  • Experienced with field work, including long days in rugged terrain
  • High level of organization, attention to detail, and initiative, with strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong work ethic and ability to effectively prioritize and address needs as they arise
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to commute to and from Lyndhurst, New Jersey required
