Overview:

Haleakalā National Park is located on the island of Maui. The park contains a multitude of different landscapes from coastal strand to mesic forest to alpine rainforest and aeolian cinder desert and is extremely high in biodiversity and cultural diversity. Vegetation management work varies widely but includes herbicide application with spray bottles and backpack sprayers, use of tools such as handsaws, weedwhackers and chainsaws, native plant outplanting, greenhouse work, fencing construction and maintenance, feral animal control with snares, and heavy physical hiking with a pack up to 50lbs. You must be comfortable using, mixing, and applying herbicide chemicals for invasive species control on a daily basis. Work occurs under all types of environmental conditions, from hot and humid at the coast to cold and wet in the rainforest to high altitude alpine conditions. 

Duties:

  • Restores native plant communities.
  • Provide plant materials for restoration and rare species recovery.
  • Controls weeds using herbicides and mechanical methods.
  • Collect, understand and analyze ecological data to determine results of resource management actions. Using and analyzing GIS data using GPS and conducting plant surveys.

Qualifications:

At least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:

1) collecting monitoring data on assorted physical restoration and vegetation management projects using specified sampling techniques and procedures;

2) monitoring and collecting propagules of rare, threatened or endangered (RTE) plants and sensitive plants and updating databases and files;

3) implementing plans and participating in invasive species projects utilizing mechanical and chemical control techniques;

4) implementing diverse ecological restoration projects through site preparation and out planting.
