Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association (CIAA) has an opening for a Biologist I/II, based at CIAA’s Headquarters in Kenai, Alaska. The Biologist I/II provides project development, implementation, and oversight for CIAA’s habitat program including salmon enumeration, flow controls, fish ladder, and invasive species projects. We are recruiting for entry level (Biologist I) or advanced level (Biologist II) candidates.

Job description:   

This is a regular, full-time, exempt position. Under the supervision of the Special Projects Manager, the Biologist I/II, by applying sound management, science and technology, performs and directs various ongoing tasks in a safe, professional and cost-effective manner in support of CIAA’s programs. Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Field work: Conducts operations required to support field projects including internship coordination, crew orientation, set up, operation and retrieval of field equipment. Requires travel, work at remote sites, and work in inclement weather.
  • Permitting: Assures all regulatory permits are implemented and in place for CIAA projects.
  • Supervision: Sets work schedules and assigns tasks to seasonal personnel as well as other designated regular staff.
  • Gear and maintenance: Operates tools, boats and outboard motors, off-road vehicles, sampling gear and other equipment. Assists with Kenai building, grounds, and field camp maintenance.
  • Data analysis and writing: Performs computer data entry and drafts project reports. Assists in grant writing and developing new projects. Recognizes or uses correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicates information (for example, facts, ideas, or messages) in a succinct and organized manner; produces written information, which may include technical material, that is appropriate for the intended audience.
  • Oral communication: Expresses information to individuals or groups effectively, considering the audience and nature of the information.

Qualifications:

The Biologist I/II must understand scientific methods and have a working command of standard fishery biology concepts. A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in biology or a related environmental field is required. This person must be able to work in inclement weather, operate fishery and water quality sampling gear, have a working knowledge of basic construction techniques, a valid Alaska driver’s license, and current CPR and First Aid certifications. Proficiency with personal computers and software packages, such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, is required.  The ability to write and speak in a concise and effective manner is necessary.

Compensation:

Biologist I salary range: $52,322 to $ 68,336 per year DOE.

Biologist II salary range: $63,923 to $83,487 per year DOE.
