The Biologist II provides support for the organization by conducting and leading field data collection, statistical and geospatial data analysis, literature reviews, reporting, and working with senior staff and clients to solve problems and answer research questions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, train, and work collaboratively with field crews to collect, record, analyze, and report high-quality stream restoration monitoring and assessment data.
  • Perform fieldwork, which may include stream and/or nearshore habitat surveys, river and/or nearshore restoration effectiveness monitoring, electrofishing, fish tagging and trapping, and snorkel surveys.
  • Oversee project implementation including collecting and managing data, ensuring quality control, summarizing, and displaying data for various studies using GIS, R and other statistical packages.
  • Assist with project scopes, proposals, and budgets.
  • Maintain client relationships and distribute periodic project updates.
  • Manage budgets, client communications, and deliverables for small projects.
  • Serve as a task lead on multiple projects and supervise and train Biologists and Technicians to support project work.
  • Write project reports and memorandums including data summaries and analysis.
  • Conduct literature reviews and data gathering for a variety of projects.
  • Ability to complete and/or delegate work assigned by senior staff.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Fisheries Science and/or Restoration Expertise: Practical understanding of salmon ecology and habitat restoration. Knowledge and experience in the identification of salmon and other stream fishes and in conducting stream habitat and topographic surveys in Central Valley streams.
  • Project Management Skills: Serve as Task Lead on several projects and delegate and train technicians as necessary to complete tasks. Produce accurate high-quality work products and deliverables on time and within budget. Resourceful, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively to find creative solutions to problems.
  • Team Leadership Skills: Contribute to the team and Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) culture, view all team members as important and treat them with respect and professionalism. Hold high personal performance and quality standards to enable the team to be successful. Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and to express and exchange ideas and to communicate with CFS team members and landowners, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Science-Business balance: This individual should demonstrate expertise in and be passionate about science, natural resources, and resolving complex fishery problems. In addition, the individual should have an understanding of consulting work and billable targets to support CFS as a profitable business.

EDUCATION / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries, Forestry, Biology or an equivalent science field and 5 years of related experience or Master’s degree in Fisheries, Forestry, Biology, or an equivalent science field and 2 year of related experience performing fisheries or wildlife studies
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Skilled with GIS (QGIS or ArcGIS) spatial data processing and mapping
  • Expertise in data collection, entry, and analysis; graphical representation and mapmaking; and communicating project methods and findings in presentations and reports

DESIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Leading and conducting stream habitat and snorkel surveys using CHaMP, EMAP, CDFW, PIBO, or similar protocols
  • Surveying and mapping stream channels with Total Station, RTK GPS, and other surveying equipment
  • Operating 4-wheel drive vehicles, boats, trailers, and other field equipment
  • Collecting and processing UAV aerial imagery and remote sensing data products

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position will be roughly 70% office time and 30% field time, with the majority of field work in the spring/summer
Applicant must be confident working in the aquatic environment including wading, snorkeling, and boating in small and large rivers, streams, lakes and estuaries
Working irregular hours (including weekends and evenings) in various kinds of weather and potentially rugged and remote terrain in order to meet project deadlines
Travel to remote areas to conduct field work for 3 to 12 days at a time. Able to drive safely in a variety of weather conditions for extended distances.

Our team achieves this through effective and unbiased data collection, insightful analysis and interpretation, and clear communications and publication of results in scientific journals.

COMPENSATION: $70,000 – $92,000/year (depending upon experience). 401 (k) has a 3% match and full vesting after one year. The annual cash bonus has a 3% target. Benefit package includes: medical, dental, vision, basic life, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance programs, PTO, paid company holidays, and other various voluntary benefits.

ESOP: CFS is a 100% employee-owned company. Our employee stock option plan (ESOP) is a qualified defined contribution plan. Our target ESOP contribution is 5%. Eligibility is after one year of service with an entry date of Jan 1 or July 1.
