ABOUT CANA
Climate Action Network Australia (CANA) seeks a fair and sustainable Australia free of climate pollution, where people and nature are protected from dangerous climate change.
As a central part of the Australian climate movement, CANA provides the coordination for network members to build relationships, collaborate on strategy and campaigns, and develop and share resources and capacity to build a stronger, more effective social movement advocating for action on climate change. We believe in building a collective movement, one with the power and influence to drive change that sees Australia cut pollution, protect nature, support communities facing climate impacts, support global action and transform our society, economy and strengthen democracy. Our role is to act as a collective impact organisation for climate advocacy, strengthening the climate movement. We do this through building and enabling channels and forums that bring our members together. This builds the capacity of our members, capacity that can make all individual members, as well as the collective, more effective
CANA is a node of Climate Action Network International.
THE ROLE
CANA invites passionate individuals to submit Expressions of Interest in joining our Board of Directors. Board members at CANA are pivotal in utilising their expertise to steer the organisation through thoughtful deliberation, constructive discussions, thorough analysis, and impactful decision-making on vital strategic initiatives. Your contribution could be the driving force behind our commitment to fostering strong climate action and climate justice throughout Australia and beyond.
ABOUT YOU
We are seeking individuals who have a deep understanding of the climate action in Australia, and who can bring new perspectives to the governance CANA.
With six existing board members, plus a chair, we are seeking between three and four new directors. We are seeking people with expertise in one more of the following areas:
- Climate campaigning
- Climate justice
- Grassroots organisations
- Communications
- Human Resources
CANA’s board values diversity and strongly encourages applications from people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
As a membership organisation, CANA highly values applications those volunteering for or employed by one of our members. However this is not a prerequisite for appointment.
QUALITIES & SKILLS REQUIRED
- Demonstrated interest or understanding in the roles and responsibilities of a Board
- Strong communication, interpersonal and people skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Financial literacy
- Tact and diplomacy
- Personal commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
- Currently possess or are eligible to obtain a valid Director Identification Number
Additional desirable attributes
- An understanding of membership-based organisations
- Familiarity with climate change issues
- History of working on climate change issues in Australia in either a civil society, business or government capacity, and a strong existing network of relationships
- Previous governance experience on boards and/or completion of equivalent qualifications to the AICD’s Company Directors course
