YANA Family Violence Service
YANA Family Violence Service (YANA), formally Women’s Liberation Halfway House is a leading specialist family violence service providing safe accommodation, advocacy and support to clients experiencing family violence. YANA was established in 1974 by activists of the women’s movement – as the first refuge for women in Victoria and we have continued our 50-year journey as Australia’s longest running independent, feminist, crisis accommodation service. We provide:
- Short term crisis accommodation
- Outreach support
- Secondary consultations
- Case management
- Advocacy
We are seeking two Board members one from a Marketing and Fundraising background and another with senior experience within the Women’s Services or Family Violence Sector with:
- The ability to maintain strict confidentiality about all aspects of YANA business.
- Understanding of feminist theories about society and the causes of domestic/family violence.
- Understanding of the Not-for-Profit Sector in which YANA operates and its intersectional, feminist approach.
- Experience in strategic planning, financial accountability and fiduciary duties, and comprehensive risk management.
- The ability to show empathy and respect for all women involved with YANA, including clients, workers and Board members.
- Prior experience in working on a Board of Management and qualifications (e.g. Australian Institute of Company Directors) is considered highly desirable.
DUTIES OF A BOARD MEMBER:
- Attendance at monthly Board meeting (held on the 3rd Monday of each month) and the Annual General Meeting.
- Contribution to sub-committees.
- Preparation prior to Meetings.
- Active participation in the decision-making process about governance, finance and strategic planning.
- A commitment to the ongoing viability of YANA as a stand-alone service within the domestic/family violence sector.
