Axon Biological Consulting (Axon) is a small growing company providing a wide range of biological compliance services to private, public, and non-profit clientele in Central and Southern California. We are an enthusiastic and dedicated group who pride ourselves on delivering high quality work products, but also consider ourselves experts on work/life balance; knowing when to close the laptop for the day.
We are currently looking for an on-call botanist to conduct rare plant surveys and vegetation mapping in the greater Ventura and Los Angeles areas, with potential for other CA regions. Other tasks, such as wildlife surveys, construction monitoring, wetland delineation, and technical writing may be available based on individual’s interest(s). This is a part-time hourly position that is fully remote with the exception of project-specific site visits.
The ideal candidate will have the following minimum experience:
- B.S. degree in biology/natural resources with focus on botany,
- 3+ years professional experience conducting botanical surveys in Central or Southern California, particularly within the Santa Monica Mountains,
- Familiarity with common/rare plants of Central and Southern California,
- Ability to use dichotomous treatments to identify plants to species,
- Familiarity with vegetation classification schemes, including Senlsitive Natural Communities,
- Familiarity with field mapping hardware/software, and
- Familiarity with habitat suitability for special-status wildlife species (training available if experience lacking).
Other desirable traits include:
- Exceptional accountability for timelines and deliverables (i.e., ability to follow through on agreed upon tasks in a timely manner),
- High value placed on clear communication and responsiveness,
- Some technical writing experience, and
- Reliable personal transportation.
Pay negotiable based on experience level.
