The mission of BPMC aims to  foster connection with nature, community, and self through outdoor education and recreation. BPMC endeavors to promote and provide immersive experiences in land-based learning that bolsters nature connection, ecological stewardship and youth resiliency. Our curriculum, camps, and staffing cultivate a sense of positive identity through place-based, experiential, outdoor recreation steeped in self and social awareness, creativity, and ecological restoration. Building strength through our collaborations and interrelationships across communities and geographies, BPMC strives to foster curiosity, creativity, and critical consciousness through curriculum rooted in the environment, local histories, earth-based arts, and wilderness skills. BPMC enters its second year of summer camps at the Loup Loup Ski Bowl offering innovative and unique learning opportunities for campers.

Goals:

• To develop and implement a culturally responsive  and inclusive summer camp model that integrates multi-cultural and intergenerational instruction, curriculum, and spaces
• Cultivate connection to nature and empower youth resilience through outdoor education and recreation
• Inspire ecological stewardship and environmental leadership through collaborations that center interrelationships across communities and geographies
• Provide immersive learning experiences for primary and secondary school aged underrepresented youth within our bioregion 

Job Summary:

As an outdoor educator you will be responsible for leading and collaborating with Loup Loup Ski Bowl and BPMC staff to deliver place-based, experiential curriculum to youth ages 8 -16 in four weeks of camps from June 22 – July 24th. The successful applicant will be expected to co-design, develop, and implement curriculum for our program working 1:1, in small groups, and whole group settings to administer safe and engaging land-based learning opportunities.  

Responsibilities & duties

• Develop and lead outdoor educational programs and workshops
• Conduct environmental and ecological education sessions
• Teach wilderness survival and safety skills
• Facilitate team-building and leadership activities
• Guide nature walks and hikes
• Plan and coordinate outdoor excursions and field trips
• Provide instruction in orienteering and map reading
• Create educational materials and resources
• Monitor and ensure the safety of participants
• Evaluate program effectiveness and participant learning outcomes
• Collaborate with schools, community groups, and other stakeholders
• Stay updated with current environmental issues and educational practices
• Assist in the maintenance of outdoor instructional areas and equipment
• Promote environmental stewardship and sustainable practices
• Offer first aid and emergency response when required

Applicants are required to have the following skills and experience:

• Must be 23 years or older
• Must be able to transport yourself to onsite and offsite locations with current driver’s license and insurance
• A minimum of one year experience working in a wilderness setting
• A minimum of two years experience working with youth
• Personal experience with and/or ability to instruct in wilderness skills such as: tracking, hunting, fishing, skinning, bone/stone/wood tools, medicine making and plant identification, traditional food knowledge, shelter building, outdoor cooking, wilderness camping and backpacking, hiking, etc
• Model and inspire social-emotional intelligence including modeling of respect, generosity, reciprocity, empathy, an equity
• Calm temperament and can safely manage groups of up to ten campers on their own
• Respectful, effective and clear communication with colleagues, staff, students and families
• Experience in backcountry camping, mountain travel, boating and canoeing, packing and riding is considered an asset
• Experience working with underserved youth
• CPR/AED certification is greatly encouraged
• Must undergo a background check

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds at times
• Must be able to hike up to one mile without a break in varying terrain
• Must be able to supervise and lead students in a variety of seasonal shifts including working in snow, heat, rain and other such adverse weather conditions
• Must be able to swim and feel comfortable wading through water such as lakes, rivers and creeks

Other information and requirements

• This is a seasonal postition: you must be available to attend all camp sessions from June 22nd to July 17th. Camp sessions are Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm. There will also be additional staff training in early June.
