Position: Temporary/Seasonal, 10-12 weeks

Distinguishing Features of the Class:  In coordination with the Upper Susquehanna Coalition (USC) Buffer Coordinator, buffer stewards will establish riparian forest buffers through practice implementation, evaluation, and management facilitation. The Buffer Steward will be trained by the USC to complete the USC Buffer Monitoring Data Collection Sheet on previously installed riparian forest buffers. The work list of buffers that shall be evaluated will be provided to the Buffer Steward by the Chenango County Soil and Water Conservation (SWCD) District Manager. The Buffer Steward will also assist other SWCD staff in hydroseeding road ditches and/or critical areas. The Buffer Steward shall report directly to the District Manager and the SWCD Board of Directors.

Typical Work Activities (Illustrative Only):

  • Travel to and from sites using a vehicle provided by the Chenango SWCD.
  • Responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of work vehicles 
  • Document conditions of riparian forest buffers utilizing the protocol developed by the USC.    This includes tree identification and analysis of vegetative communities.
  • Develop management action recommendations needing to take place, informed by the USC Buffer monitoring data collection sheet.
  • Perform management activities in large areas. This includes the repositioning of tree tubes, installing stakes, mats, and mowing with walk behind mowers and weed whackers.
  • Work with landowners to understand practice standards and applicable program requirements.
  • Act as a liaison between landowners and the SWCD to communicate needs and concerns, successes, and failure, etc.
  • Educate and promote riparian forest buffers to landowners.
  • Facilitate the implementation of the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP).
  • Assist in Hydroseeding activities with other SWCD staff as directed by the district manager.
  • Help with maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the SWCD district manager.

Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

Ability to work independently, work outdoors, manage workload efficiently, demonstrate accuracy, integrity, confidentiality, and sound professional judgement. Due to the work setting, physical condition, and work ability to commensurate with the demands of the position. Maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License throughout the duration of employment.
