Position description

We’re currently seeking a dynamic individual with a demonstrated interest in the decarbonisation of buildings to work on various issues with us, including the implementation process of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and our Build Better Lives campaign. The individual will gain professional experience in our energy team as a Buildings Policy & Campaign Assistant. The position is full time and based in Belgium (in our Brussels-based secretariat or working from home).

Required skills and experiences:

  • Recent graduate or advanced degree in a relevant policy field such as economics, politics or communications;
  • Good knowledge of EU climate, energy policies (interest in energy efficiency, renewable heating topics is a plus);
  • Excellent level of written and spoken English (any other language is a plus);
  • Excellent communication, organizational and networking skills;
  • High level of motivation and the ability to learn and execute project work while meeting deadlines;
  • Team spirit, creativity and proactivity;
  • Experience in using Google Workspace (Doc, Excel, Powerpoint etc.).

The ideal candidate will preferably have some of the following attributes:

  • Demonstrated interest in the mission and values of CAN Europe and ideally first experience in an NGO or social movement environment;
  • Experience in energy policies and/or campaigns especially around either energy efficiency, renewable energy and heating, and sustainable construction materials applied to the built environment or alternatively experience in housing-related topics;
  • Analytical skills and quick learner;
  • Experience in large team working in a hybrid setting;
  • Familiarity with EU institutions, particularly the functioning of the European Parliament and the Council;
  • Experience in using any creative content programme (Canva or Adobe Suite etc. is a plus).

Internship contents:

  • The intern’s role will focus on supporting the work around the implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive along with the CAN Europe Building Policy Coordinator. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the Build Better Lives Campaign and closely work with our Renewable Heating Campaign Coordinator and related activities (i.e., supporting mobilization, communications actions, planning activities and coordination of joint actions), thereby acquiring relevant knowledge, skills and experiences for future employment;
  • The intern will gain insights into the operation of an international NGO coalition fighting dangerous climate change and a chance to engage with a number of other NGOs, decision makers and climate activists;
  • Tasks will include support in managing contacts with Members of our network, support in advocacy and strategic planning activities/network mobilization as part of our work towards the EPBD implementation (especially organizing workshops and webinars), coordination and organization of calls, support in writing talking points and compelling advocacy documents (blogs, briefings etc.);
  • Tasks around the Build Better Lives Campaign will include support in producing and updating website content, support and engagement in mobilization actions with youth movements and grass-roots initiatives in key countries, support in the identification of amplifiers on social media of campaign key messages in key countries, assistance in broad project managing tasks.
