SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 (ST2)

Habitat Program – Fish Passage & Screening Division
Ellensburg, Washington – Kittitas County

Anticipated Appointment Length: Four (4) months

July 1, 2024 – October 31, 2024

Bull Trout are federally listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. This position will work with the supervisor and WDFW staff to monitor and restore volitional fish passage in tributaries to BOR operated reservoirs in the Yakima basin.

This position works to preserve, protect, and perpetuate fish life in a unique way by WDFW standards because of the variety of duties and focus areas.  The candidate will assist with monitoring fish passage conditions for Endangered Species Act-listed Bull Trout in tributary streams to reservoirs in the central Cascade mountains. In this role, the incumbent will need to have a strong work ethic and attention to detail. 

Duties:

Here is what you will be doing, 

  • Document fish passage conditions temporally and spatially at each stream using GPS and camera.
  • Document and remove any barriers to fish passage by removing recreational rock dams, bridges or other features that negatively impact fish passage.
  • Fish passage remediation is achieved by proactively modifying the streams using hand tools and native materials to create volitional fish passage.
  • Construct, by hand, channel training bars, weirs, or other features to maintain and improve fish passage.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Working outside with potential loud noises and extreme weather exposure including sun, rain, snow, and wildfire smoke.
    • Carry 50-75lbs of gear over rough and uneven terrain, Night work, boat operation, work in cold flowing water, walking 3-8 miles per day.
    • Working in remote locations with limited communication.
    • Minimal office work.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Non-scheduled. Night and daytime work based on work tasks as assigned.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel and hotel stays required.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Operation of motor vehicles including 4×4 trucks, ATV’s, boats, ability to safely tow a trailer.  Hand tools such as rakes, shovels, post pounders and hay hooks.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Frequent interactions with the public, area recreationalists, neighboring private landowners, United States Forest Service (USFS), Yakama Nation tribal members and fisheries staff (YN), United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBOR), United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and local Bull trout recovery partners such as Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group (MCFEG), Kittitas Conservation Trust (KCT) and others.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

OR

*Equivalent education/experience.

*College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid driver’s license

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

  • Experience with Fish Biometrics
  • Experience with Yakima River Basin Fish identification
  • Prior manual labor experience including the use of various hand tools.
