Primary Purpose : To support the reporting and data initiatives of the university through data management, integration, and business intelligence. This involves developing and implementing the data warehouse and business intelligence solutions that will meet the information needs of the university.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Manager of Reporting and Data Systems, the business intelligence developer will perform hands-on technical work to code data transformations, develop dimensional data models, and build complex Power BI reports. They will interact with business clients to understand information needs and develop reporting requirements. They will have the personal initiative to develop an in-depth knowledge of business rules, processes, and workflows. They will share knowledge with fellow BI developers to maintain consistent development practices and promote a positive team environment. This position is in-person located at the Saskatoon campus.
Accountabilities
- Design, develop, and implement business intelligence solutions, including data models, reports, dashboards, and data visualizations using SQL, SSIS, ADF, and Power BI. Apply best practices in data visualization to present complex data in a clear and intuitive manner.
- Design, develop, and test extract-transform-load processes to integrate data into facts and dimensions in the institutional data warehouse. Monitor and troubleshoot nightly ETL jobs to identify and resolve performance or data load issues during on-call rotations.
- Work with business stakeholders to define management and strategic reporting requirements. Develop report and data visualization prototypes to validate the requirements. Identify issues of data quality (e.g., accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and consistency) and ensure that data-related problems are addressed and resolved in a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance with data governance policies and security standards. Implement access controls, data encryption, and data masking techniques to protect sensitive information. Work with data managers and data stewards to standardize business terms, define and classify data, and establish access and information requirements.
- Develop and post documentation for customized tasks, procedures, and services that relate to your work.
- Provide regular updates to the manager and the team on progress, emerging issues, and new opportunities.
- Stay current with the latest trends and advancements in business intelligence and take part in training opportunities as directed by your manager.
- Perform other related duties or projects as required.
Qualifications: An undergraduate degree in computer science, information systems or related discipline. Additional professional training relating to data warehousing, business intelligence, analytics or business analysis is a plus. Five year’s solid experience with data integration, data warehousing or business intelligence.
Skills
- Proficiency in SQL and database technologies such as SQL Server.
- Strong experience in ETL development using tools such as SSIS or Azure Data Factory.
- Strong experience with data warehousing concepts and dimensional modeling.
- Experience with reporting and data visualization tools such as SSRS and Power BI.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
