This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to join our Recording & Monitoring Team, in a
position where they can exercise skills in volunteer development and support, within the
context of a long-term scientific monitoring project.
The UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS) was established in 1976 and is run as a partnership
between several organisations, with Butterfly Conservation taking the lead role in volunteer
support, promotion and feedback. Butterfly transects, which form the core of the scheme,
require great skill and dedication from the volunteers who undertake them. In 2023, over 2,200
sites were monitored in the UK by this method. The UKBMS also incorporates the Wider
Countryside Butterfly Survey (WCBS) (established in 2009) which monitors butterflies (and other
taxa) at a network of randomly selected 1-km squares.
Regular outputs from the UKBMS include annual butterfly species trends, released as UK
Government Official Statistics, and biodiversity indicators published by UK and country
governments. The UKBMS data are also used extensively in biodiversity research.
The successful candidate will report to our UKBMS Programme Lead, and be responsible for
supporting the UKBMS volunteer network – promoting the scheme, providing technical advice on
field methods and online data entry, and producing regular feedback. They will also assist
other organisations in utilising our methodologies.
This is a remote working role, with occasional travel within the UK as required. You will need
to be self-motivated, well organised and able to work independently, as part of a virtual team,
and under pressure to meet challenging deadlines.
If you are excited about the prospect of working for a leading wildlife charity and
contributing to one of the world’s most successful biological monitoring schemes, and align to
the charity’s aims, values and commitment to equal opportunities then please read through the
job description and person specification, to see if you have the right skills to join the
team..
Butterfly Conservation is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from people
from the widest possible diversity of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. We are dedicated
to encouraging a supportive and inclusive culture. Please tell us if there are any reasonable
adjustments, we can make to help you in your application or with our recruitment process.
Candidates must have the right to work and be resident in the UK.
We reserve the right to close the vacancy early before the advertised closing date and time.
No Agencies please
Closing date: 23:59 hours on Sunday 7th July 2024
Interviews will take place on: Thursday 18th July 2024 (Remotely via Zoom)
We believe our work has never been more important.
Wildlife is in steep decline across the UK and over three-quarters of butterflies and
two-thirds of moths are declining. We recognise it needs a great team with a wide variety of
skills to tackle the problems facing butterflies, moths and the environment.
Our staff and volunteers are proud to be part of Butterfly Conservation and are dedicated to
making a difference to the environment we live in. We understand the importance of maintaining
and expanding our expert and valued team of people and offer a range of roles located all over
the UK, from the peat bogs in Scotland to the post room in Dorset.
