Micro-gardening Technical Trainer

Overview:
As a part of PUI’s intervention targeting shelters under the WASH & Rehabilitation project in Abu Ghraib district. Micro-gardening is an intensive gardening method that is adapted to small urban spaces. Micro-gardens are designed to be highly productive, energy and space efficient, sustainable, and affordable. Micro-gardening is an example of climate-smart agriculture, which is not affected by droughts or floods, and can improve local livelihoods. The aim of this activity will be to support the 20 most food-insecure households in the Abu Ghraib Informal Settlement to produce fresh food to cover their own consumption needs, and potentially sell their surplus harvest. This activity will prioritize female-headed households in Abu Ghraib Informal Settlement.
This training aims to provide technical training to 20 food-insecure in Abu Ghraib district, Al-Shuhadaa neighborhood, with a specific target on subsistence gardeners and prioritizing pregnant and lactating women referred by PUI’s Health and shelter teams, who will be responsible for supervision and monitoring during and after the end of the sessions. The technical training will also be complemented by awareness on nutrition, health and hygiene delivered by PUI, emphasizing on healthy diet, especially in terms of infant and young child feeding, consumption of adequate amount of water, the importance of dietary diversity, food handling, personal hygiene, hand washing, proper food storage and micro-gardening. After the training, a kit will be distributed to participants.
Capacity Development Expectations:
The training outcome includes:
•Increased knowledge about climate change, factors contributing to it, and expected future trends in Iraq.
•Increased knowledge on smart agricultural practices-based approach and studies related to climate-sensitive programming.
•The 20 households are able to conduct a feasibility study so the HHs can run their own future projects.
•Strengthened the capacity of 20 households on soil fertility testing and composting.
•20 HHs are able to produce products (food) within the micro gardens.
•20 HHs behaviors and practices changed to be more environment friendly.
Training Content and Methodology
•Training is expected to be conducted in 1 month, two sessions a week, each session to last for 2 hours. This is estimated and subject to medication.
•Training would include activities, interactive discussions, and case studies alongside academic and reliable sources.
•Define the needful items and distribution of 20 micro gardening tool kits according to the proposal.
•Provision of micro gardening practical follow up sessions to 20 vulnerable households.
•Prepare the curriculum of the training on home-gardening to be delivered to the beneficiaries of the project as well as the manual to be distributed to the trainees as reference for the maintenance of their home gardens.
•Produce recorded sessions in a video format about the topics delivered during the training, to be shared with trainees for future reference.
•Provide the Pre/post test questions and the qualitative analysis of the results about the topic(s) delivered.
•Prepare / develop the assessment form, assess the 20 households and produce a BOQ for each household depending on their need regarding the establishment of the micro-gardening space; the BOQ will include the material to build the gardening space and the list of seeds, seedlings, small trees, fertilizers and pesticides required, focusing on the nutritious aspect of the crops.
Training Evaluation and Reporting

Initial report: context analysis, training methodology, curricula, presentations, handouts/manual, recorded sessions, pre/post-tests, provision of work plan including all activities.
