Offer Description

UiT The Arctic University of Norway has established «The Arctic MSCA-PF program» (uit.no/project/arcticmsca ) to recruit excellent young researchers planning to apply for a Marie Skƚodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) to pursue a career in research. We invite applications from promising young researchers within the field of Epidemiology, public health, Indigenous health, health care services, interpersonal violence, mental health, chronic pain, prescriptions of opioids and psychotropic medicine. The selected candidate will write a proposal for a 24-month MSCA-PF at UiT together with Dr. Astrid Eriksen . This is an opportunity to accelerate your research career while living in the urban research city of Tromsø, uniquely located at the top of the world surrounded by some of Europe’s last pristine wild nature.

This call is one of 70 from pre-selected supervisors at UiT The Arctic University of Norway through the “Arctic MSCA-PF program”. Successful postdoc candidates will be invited for a three-day MSCA-PF symposium June 4-6, 2024 (hybrid physical/digital event, see details at uit.no/project/arcticmsca/program-structure ). At this event, the candidates will present their past research achievements, discuss future plans with their potential supervisor and learn how to write a successful MSCA-PF application. The selected candidates will, jointly with the supervisor, write the MSCA-PF application by the deadline of September 11, 2024.

In this call we search for talented, young researchers within the field of Epidemiology, public health and Indigenous health as presented by Dr. Eriksen :

My research field includes health and living conditions of indigenous and minority groups in general, and the indigenous Sami in particular. Belonging to an ethnic minority group is recognized as a risk factor for illness. Globally, several explanations have been linked to ethnical factors associated with poorer health, such as low socioeconomic status and risky behaviors like cigarette smoking and alcohol intake. Other factors are specifically linked to ethnic status, such as being discriminated against, higher prevalence’s of violence, and having inadequate access to health care. Health care providers may also demonstrate limited cultural sensitivity, predisposing minority groups to suffer a higher burden of disease. The Indigenous Sami people mainly populate the northern and middle parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of the Russian Federation. The largest number of Sami people live in Norway, and many Sami lives in cities all over Norway. Like many other indigenous groups in the Arctic, the Sami have been subjected to harsh assimilation and discrimination. My research field have specifically aimed at interpersonal violence, mental health, chronic pain, use of opioids and psychotropic medicine, and health care services to the Sami people using the SAMINOR survey (for more information see SAMINOR.no) liked to national registers. The third wave of the SAMINOR Survey (SAMINOR 3) has already started (2023), given us the opportunity to updated data on the multiethnic population in Norway.

Please send your CV (max 3 pages) and describe a research project that will strengthen and complement the presented research (max 2 pages) to [email protected]  by Feb 16th 2024. Mark your application “Arctic MSCA”. Successful candidates will be contacted in late March 2024.
