Position description

Call for Proposals (CFP): Assessing the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Business Membership Organizations (BMOs).

The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) invites research proposals examining the role of AI in business associations, exploring both benefits (efficiency, on-demand services, customer relations) and risks (costs, inaccuracies, biases, data protection, ethics). The proposals should focus on how business membership organizations are integrating AI, including generative AI, into operations around membership management, service delivery, content generation, and productivity. Proposals should explore factors driving adoption, risk management, member feedback, and advocacy efforts to influence AI regulations.

While the exact scope of the paper will be determined with the selected proposal, researchers should use the guidelines below and propose a research approach that may include a survey of AI use by BMOs that identifies organizations that employ AI, methods of use, experiences and the operational threats and advantages to BMOs. [AG1] The researchers should strive to conduct the survey by examining the following:

  • AI use, stratified by market sector, region, group (e.g., women-led organizations, urban and rural).
  • Prepare case studies exploring AI advantages and challenges based on survey evidence.
  • Identify best practices and strategies for BMOs to mitigate threats and challenges and leverage benefits.

Review Process

CIPE will consider proposals on these topics and questions and judge them on the strength, originality and clarity of the proposed ideas. Proposals that do not respond directly to the above topics will not be considered. Full terms, including the final structure of the paper, deliverables, timeline and compensation schedule will be determined through an agreement between the selected researcher and CIPE, and specified in a contract or honorarium letter.

Submission Guidelines

  • Please submit the following documents by May 24, 2024.
    • An abstract (300 words or less) of the proposed topic and research methodology.
    • A CV and a sample research paper, preferably written for a policy or NGO audience.
    • A budget proposal that includes a daily rate, number of billable days, and other expected related expenses incurred during research. The entire cost proposal should not exceed the maximum available funds of $20,000 USD.

Selected applicants will be notified by June 7, 2024.

Applicants must hold the following minimum credentials:

  • Post-graduate degree, from an accredited institution of higher learning, in economics, public policy, business, political science, international relations or other related fields.
  • A minimum of six years of research and writing experience in policy or economic reform, markets, entrepreneurship, democratic governance, corruption, etc., with a focus in emerging and/or transition economies.
  • Strong commitment to ethical and professional standards of research.

All inquiries should be directed to CIPE’s Policy & Program Learning (PPL) Program Officer Adam Goldstein at [email protected]
