Location: Sierra Leone
Drawing lessons from 2014 Ebola, 2017 Mudslide and Covid-19; Sierra Leone has undergone major reforms in disaster risk management. The government enacted a new National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) Act in 2020 which is aligned with the Sendai Framework and the National Mid-Term Development Plan 2019-2023. The NDMA Act 2022 promotes the decentralization of DRM governance and its integration into MDAs. Considering the above, and in line with the Sendai Framework for Action, the UNDP through its Natural Resource Management Portfolio is supporting the NDMA to implement community-based interventions, with a people centered approach. With support from the UNDP, 52 Chiefdoms Disaster Management Committees have established and trained in some of the most disaster-prone areas in Pujehun Kailahun, Kambia, Portloko, Karene, Falaba districts, utilizing the CDMCs SOP handbook. This year another set of 16 CDMCs will be established in Bonthe and Moyamba districts.
