Sierra Nevada Journeys is seeking a Camp Healthcare Supervisor with experience managing a camp’s health and safety program about our campers’ and staff’s health and wellness. The Camp Healthcare Supervisor must be well versed in American Camp Association health protocols and provide medical treatments for campers and staff, including administering medication and complying with all required documentation. This position is at our Environmental Education Camp in Portola, California.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Review and sign off on American Camp Association (ACA) health protocols.
  • Oversee the preseason set-up and the postseason closing of the Health Center, which includes performing an opening and closing inventory of all supplies and equipment and ordering supplies and equipment as needed and approved.
  • Assessment and assist with the health and hygiene needs of campers.
  • Administer medication and treatment to campers throughout their stay at camp.
  • Identify pertinent camper medical needs (caution sheets, special diets, etc.) and ensure that information is communicated with the appropriate camp staff.
  • Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file
  • Prepare and utilize daily medical logs for treatment and medications
  • Cross-check all unit medication logs
  • Oversee daily medication management, logging, and distribution to units
  • Supervise and care for people admitted to the Health Center
  • Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies
  • Participate in activities, hikes, trail rides, waterfront programs, and more as required to supervise camper and staff health and wellness.
  • Provide proper nursing intervention regarding camper and staff illnesses, conditions, or emergency care. Make appropriate referrals and provide follow-up care as needed.
  • Administer immediate first aid to injured parties, perform medical assessments, and implement nursing intervention as guided by nursing best practices.
  • Keep records regarding the administration of medication, prescribed treatments, and other health and medical needs. Follow the State of California and American Camp Association standards in maintaining the records.
  • Be familiar with the health protocols and standing orders approved by a designated physician, and follow protocols with campers and employees.
  • Oversee the Camp Healthcare Coordinator rounds throughout the camp, checking on campers, employees, and the health and safety of the camp—report facility and grounds health risk factors.
  • Oversee the completion and follow-up of incident reports.
  • Supervise and coordinate other nursing staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to pass a background check. We work with children, and their safety is our utmost priority.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or higher level of medical certification in the State of California
  • Ability to work irregular hours Sunday through Friday
  • Previous experience as a Healthcare Supervisor at a camp that serves youth with developmental and physical disabilities is preferred. Our programs serve a variety of youth, teens, and adults. We also have campers with diabetes, cerebral palsy, and autism.
  • Ability to maintain a written record system
  • Familiarity with medications
  • Knowledge of summer camp health practices
  • Previous occupational health and safety experience
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and First Aid certifications
  • Knowledge of the American Camp Association Health and Wellness standards
  • Previous experience working with people with disabilities preferred
  • Excellent working skills, including communication, organization, and attention to detail
  • Live locally during the camp season, June 3 to August 4, 2024, or onsite for nighttime (call-back emergencies)
  • All employees must attest in writing they have up-to-date immunizations against the diseases needed for public school attendance in California.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to physically assist campers with mobility impairment
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance needed to maintain constant supervision of campers

Program Times:

  • June 9, 2024 – August 2, 2024 (start date is June 3, before programs start)
  • Expected hours per week: 40 – 45 hours per week
  • The schedule is subject to change as groups may be added or moved.

COMPENSATION

  • Compensation Package $20-$35 per hour (depends on experience) plus onsite staff housing and meals while at camp
  • Potential for an additional 3% pay for Spanish fluency or other languages relevant to supporting our programs
