Under the direction of the Food Service Manager or Cook, the kitchen assistant helps with food preparation, service, and storage. Responsible for ensuring compliance with sanitary health codes, including but not limited to cleaning and sanitizing surfaces, utensils, and equipment; disposing of food and other waste products; and storing food properly. Operates the dishwasher and washes pots, pans, and other kitchen equipment.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be 16 years or older to meet the age requirements for the position set by the NYS Department of Health.
- Able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.
- Able to lift 20-50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Possess a valid Suffolk County Department of Health Food Managers Certificate.
- 1-2 years previous experience with increasing responsibility in a kitchen.
- Knowledge of generally accepted nutrition guidelines.
- Able to operate commercial kitchen equipment.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Administrative Responsibilities:
Management – 5%
- Ensure that staff assisting with food service use tongs, gloves, or other hand barriers.
- Ensure cleanliness of food preparation and delivery areas
Coordination/Operation – 90%
- Wash and sanitize dishes, pots, pans, utensils, etc., by machine or hand.
- Sanitize kitchen surfaces and equipment regularly throughout the day.
- Sanitize tables in the dining area throughout the day.
- Sweep and mop the kitchen, dining hall, and adjacent areas.
- Remove and dispose of all food waste and trash from kitchen areas and dining room.
- Empty trash cans in the kitchen and dining area and dispose of them in the dumpster.
- Clean and wash trash cans as needed.
- Assist with meal preparation as directed, including, but not limited to, cleaning fresh food; weighing ingredients; chopping and grinding meats, vegetables, and fruits; and watching, turning, and stirring food.
- Assist with placing and removing food from ovens and cooktops.
- Prepare food trays for buffet service or family-style service as directed.
- Set up food service areas.
- Serve meals as directed.
- Clean service areas after meals and return unused food and materials to the kitchen/storage.
- Set up and prepare the dining hall with supplies needed for the next meal.
- Assist with unloading and proper storing of food and supply deliveries.
- Assist with inventory control; notify the food service manager or cook when inventory is running low.
- Assist in keeping materials and equipment in good condition.
- Sort recyclables as directed.
- Perform other related duties as necessary.
Professional Improvement – 5%
- In cooperation with Supervisor and Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
- Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

- Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
- Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.
- Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
