The Latino Heritage Internship Program seeks to engage ethnically and racially diverse young professionals in natural resource careers. 

The following is an additional requirement:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
  • Valid Driver’s License: Required for this position.

Position Description: 

This LHIP intern will be a part of the Interpretation team at the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands. The position will consist of 60% visitor services and interpretation. The intern will work at the front desk of a busy visitor center, providing resource information and park orientation, as well as roving trails and providing Leave No Trace, stewardship, and safety information to visitors.

After receiving training and mentorship from their supervisor and peers, the intern will develop and present formal interpretive programs within the park. These programs will focus on park ecology, cultural history, geology, and dark skies. Additional informal programming will be presented by the intern at various locations around the park.

20% of the intern’s time will be spent as part of the social media and web team. The intern will work directly with the Visual Information Specialist and Canyonlands team to develop and write posts. In addition to regular posts and social media campaigns, they will plan and create content for the annual Latino Conservation Week.

Throughout the summer, the intern will also spend 20% of their time on community outreach. A goal of the project is to cultivate new park experiences and community outreach for the local Latino community in Moab. Sixteen percent of Moab residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, and the park is actively working on increasing its reach and connection with these communities.

The intern’s primary projects will be to work with the park’s Outreach & Volunteers Assistant Coordinator to create various youth and community programming. Programming includes, but is not limited to:

  • Free Summer Lunch Program – Work with the city of Moab to develop and present short educational programs to kids in low-income neighborhoods. Spanish language fluency is highly valuable.
  • Youth Garden Project – Create ecology and astronomy lessons for the Youth Garden’s Summer Camp, serving 1st-6th graders.
  • Southeast Utah AstroFest – Assist rangers at community events promoting the value of light pollution-free night skies and the AstroFest event. Facilitate crowd management during the 3-day event at Canyonlands, Arches, and local state parks. Potential for Spanish language night sky interpretation.

Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority (PLC)
The Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority is a special hiring authority available to qualifying interns. The intern must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, or a veteran up to age 35 and complete 640 hours of work on an appropriate conservation project to be eligible for this hiring authority. Upon successful completion of the PLC project(s), the intern is eligible for two years to be hired non-competitively into a federal seasonal, term, or permanent position. The applicant must apply to a PLC-eligible position advertised on USAJobs.gov and selected off a non-competitive certificate of eligibility.
