Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary: The Career Development Graduate Advisor in The Career Center is for graduate students interested in supporting Villanova students with their career and professional development needs. This role is geared towards graduate students pursuing a Master’s Degree in Counseling, Human Resources, or Higher Education, though we encourage all applicants with relevant experience and interests to apply. This graduate student position is a paid role consisting of approximately 12-20 hours per week for the academic year. Successful graduate assistants are those who have a strong interest in developing advising skills, an interest in higher education and recruiting, and a passion for helping others.
The Graduate Assistant will be involved with all aspects of the office. Our goal is for the graduate assistant to enhance his/her skill set in relevant areas of interest that will be a benefit to the student and the office. These areas may include advising skills, presentation skills, awareness of the career development process, and knowledge of the career planning and recruiting field. Personal counseling or long-term therapy is not a component of this experience.
Duties include:

  • Meet with students (undergraduate and graduate) and alumni during Career Center Drop-in hours with the potential to take 1:1 advising appointments.
  • Advise and coach students and alumni on resume/cover letter building, job search strategies, professional readiness, career decision making, and interview preparation.
  • Conduct skill-building workshops and presentations on topics such as resume writing, interviewing, and LinkedIn. Develop strong working knowledge of Handshake career management system and Career Center resources.
  • Train students on the use of Handshake and other available career resources.

Other potential duties: Aid in execution of career fairs, employer events, and additional Career Center programming and events. Assist with on-campus recruiting, placement activities, and marketing campaigns as needed.

Requirements:
  • Must be a Villanova University graduate student enrolled in a Master’s Degree in Counseling, Human Resources, or Higher Education or have relevant experience in career/student advising.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort presenting to large and small groups.
