Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Career Development Program Manager to join the Career Pathways Office. The Career Pathways Office organizes a variety of career development programs that help early career researchers develop skills that will be valuable in their careers, whether in academia, industry, government, or at Berkeley Lab. Examples include the annual SLAM science communication competition, the Postdoc Career Fair , the Senior Leadership and Management Skills Course and the Early Career Enrichment Program .

Berkeley Lab’s Directorate is excited to add a Career Development Program Manager to the Career Pathways team to provide one-on-one coaching as well as program development that facilitates the educational, professional, and personal success of postdoctoral, early- and mid-career researchers. In this role, the program manager will develop program content that reflects Berkeley Lab’s research, expertise, and career pathways in STEM, including establishing program requirements, estimating budgets, creating proposals, and recommending strategic objectives. Additionally, the position will support current programs by formulating recommendations to enhance existing programs, interface with external and internal stakeholders on programmatic challenges, and review and develop additional content for early- to mid-career researchers that builds upon STEM initiatives and the diversity and equity goals of Berkeley Lab. The role will also work closely with our early-career community, advising them on a range of career-related topics from investigating career paths and job searches; developing competitive curriculum vitae and cover letters; preparing for interviews, networking and offer negotiation; maintaining a professional online presence; and managing career changes.

What You Will Do:

  • Advise doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers, providing in-depth guidance on career-related matters and job search strategies based on individual advising needs and collaborating to develop action plans.

  • Produce original content for presentations, workshops, videos, web pages, digital handouts, social media, and other educational materials, including resume and curriculum vitae tip sheets for trending career topics.

  • Write and produce engaging, accurate, and compelling educational content and marketing content in various styles appropriate to target audiences, including social media content to engage graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career researchers.

  • Leverage current recruiting trends and collaborate with the employer community for doctoral and postdoctoral career opportunities; promote networking opportunities with alumni and employers seeking doctoral, and postdoc candidates.

  • Develop, plan and execute career events for small and large groups, including Berkeley Lab’s Postdoc Career Fair.

  • Actively participate and present at professional workshops, seminars, and conferences, including representing the Career Pathways Office at events and professional associations.

  • Create structured career development programs/activities for groups and individuals; adapt content for early- to mid-career researchers.

  • Utilize current recruiting and career development trends, relevant on and off-campus resources, and related technology to influence current and future program outcomes. Track and report metrics for program outcomes.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM, education, a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in or in association with a graduate academic office, career center, or equivalent professional environment.

  • Experience developing career and professional development activities, learning experiences, and/or curriculum.

  • Experience leading professional development and/or science communication workshops.

  • Experience advising graduate-level students, event planning, developing original career content, and leading graduate student engagement and programming.

  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills, including online communication platforms, active listening and collaboration skills, and tailoring communications and presentations to meet the needs of diverse audiences.

  • Demonstrate excellence in collaborating effectively with colleagues.

  • Strong project management and organizational skills, including ability to manage conflicting priorities and assist in developing action plans leading to successful completion of tasks.

  • Advanced-level skills with MS Office Software Suite (e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, Word, MS Project), Adobe Acrobat, and Google collaborative tools (e.g., Google Mail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Sites, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Smartsheet).

  • Strong aptitude toward leveraging technology-based utility tools to perform administrative functions and working with institutional systems and databases.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in education or STEM field; a background in engineering and/or computer science is preferred.

  • Experience with developing and delivering online content.

  • Experience with program implementation/evaluation and issues related to education research.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is expected to pay $120,000 to $140,000 per year. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule – a combination of teleworking and performing work on-site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
