Career-Track Research Scientist

The Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Division (ESDR) works on developing advanced batteries and fuel cells for transportation and stationary energy storage, grid-connected technologies for a cleaner, more reliable, resilient, and cost-effective future, and demand responsive and distributed energy technologies for a dynamic electric grid.

The ESDR Division is seeking a Career-Track Research Scientist in the Energy Storage Group to lead and conduct cutting-edge research and development in the areas of electrical energy storage and conversion science and technology. This job aims at innovative and detailed experimental research to develop new low-cost materials and electrochemical processes, characterization approaches, testing and performance evaluation protocols for rechargeable batteries and relevant technologies and devices.  These efforts involve the discovery of new materials, research on process engineering and energy storage device testing aimed towards high-impact deployment in transportation and large-scale stationary applications. 

In this exciting role, you will work as part of a world-class team in ESDR Division, ETA  and  LBNL to understand and alleviate the multitude of problems that prevent advanced batteries from being used in plug-in and electric vehicles as well as collaborate in other programs related to materials and energy storage research at Berkeley Lab, including DOE EERE and BES sponsored projects e.g., Battery Materials Research program, DRX cathode and Silicon Consortium programs, and consortia of battery companies working with academia and National Labs. 

What You Will Do:

• Conduct research within an established framework of projects funded by DOE and LBNL.
• Collaborate with Lab Scientific staff on technical multidisciplinary projects requiring intellectual leadership and creativity.
• Contribute to or co-author publications, expected to become lead author publications.
• Prepare funding proposals.
• Present findings at seminars and/or conferences.
• Actively works to build a network of contacts and collaborators within their field of research and at funding agencies.
• Report research progress to funders.
• Supervises and provides scientific direction to technical staff and students.
• Carries out research in full compliance with the Lab safety regulations and policies, supervises safe conduct of others in the labs, maintains the labs and equipment in good order.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

• Act as liaison between PIs / Scientists, other LBNL employees, and external contacts.
• Upon completion of required training may be eligible for full PI status.

What is Required:

• Advanced degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Physics or a related field and up to 5 years of relevant professional experience.
• Demonstrated experience using advanced principles, theories, and concepts to R&D problems in a field of materials sciences, electrochemistry and battery S&T.
• Excellent academic record and evaluations.
• Demonstrated experience preparing funding proposals.
• Demonstrated experience planning and completing projects.
• Significant experience using advanced X-ray, optical and electron-based characterization techniques at Natl. Lab user facilities and labs.
• Proven record of publications and achievements.
• Ability to conduct creative research in the area of rechargeable batteries.
• Proficiency using standard programming languages used to control experimental equipment.
• General knowledge of electrochemistry and electrochemical technologies.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, clients and international collaborators.
• Ability to apply advanced principles, theories, and concepts to R&D problems in the field of electrical energy storage.
• Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, and presentation skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and  as part of a team.
• Advanced Excel and Microsoft and Google Suites applications.
• Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize many competing deadlines.

Desired Qualifications:

• PhD in chemistry or a related field.
• Project Management experience.
• Experience managing a team of researchers.
• General knowledge of environmental science and technology.

Notes:

• This is a full time, 1 year, career-track term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to a career appointment, based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs
• This full salary range of this position is between $119,124 to $166,764 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $135,792 to $150,084 per year depending upon candidates’ full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

• Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
