About the College
Located on a beautiful 136 acre property in the Yarra Valley (60 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD), Worawa Aboriginal College is an Aboriginal community initiative as Victoria’s only registered Independent Aboriginal Girl’s School. A full boarding school, Worawa caters for Aboriginal girls in the secondary years of schooling, Years 7-12. Worawa was established as a response to the needs of Aboriginal adolescents and the difficulties these young people experience in the mainstream educational system. Students come from Aboriginal communities across the country.
The Gananggurr pedagogy model is based on the Aboriginal values of Relationship, Responsibility, Respect and Rigour that inform all aspects of College operations. Along with the core academic program, emphasis is placed on nurturing and celebrating Aboriginal culture as a crucial aspect of student self-esteem and well-being.
About the Role
Reporting to the Principal (or Principal’s delegate), the Careers and Pathways Advisor plays a pivotal role in guiding and supporting students in their journey towards academic and professional success. The incumbent will work closely with students, teachers, and external stakeholders to facilitate meaningful career exploration, develop tailored pathways, and provide invaluable guidance on education and employment opportunities.
Duties of this role include (but are not limited to):
- Conducting one one-on-one and group career counselling sessions.
- Development of Pathways and Career Action Plans for students based on their goals and aspirations.
- Act as an industry liaison, establish and maintain strong relationships with local businesses, industries, and tertiary institutions.
- Staying informed about current employment trends, skill requirements, and educational opportunities.
- Facilitate a structured workplace learning program, internships, and networking opportunities for students to gain real-world experience.
- Assist students in developing essential job search skills.
- Collaborate with academic staff to align structured workplace learning opportunities with in-school and external VET programs.
This position requires the incumbent to embrace the Worawa ethos of Aboriginal values, Aboriginal led decision making and the right to Aboriginal self-determination.
The successful candidate must have:
- Certificate IV Careers Development (or other equivalent and relevant qualification).
- Proven experience in career counselling or advising within an educational setting.
- Familiarity with the Australian education system, tertiary institutions, and vocational pathways.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal cultures and a commitment to promoting cultural identity.
- Strong and versatile teaching skills and ability to adapt the teaching program to suit the needs of each student including EAL/D.
- First Aid certificate.
- Anaphylaxis Awareness training.
- Working knowledge of the Victorian Department of Human Services and other legislative Child Safety, Mandatory Reporting and Duty of Care requirements (to be gained within 6 months of appointment if not current).
- Non-Government Schools Protecting Children-Mandatory reporting and other Obligations Certificate.
Desirable
- Identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training
- Experience working with the Aboriginal community and a demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the diversity of Aboriginal cultures and issues affecting the Aboriginal community
