headspace Early Psychosis is a specialist early intervention program for young people experiencing a first episode of psychosis, or at high risk of developing psychosis. The multidisciplinary team provide assessment, case management and functional recovery interventions.

The Family Peer Support Worker provides recovery orientated, person centred peer support to families, carers and significant others of young people accessing the headspace Early Psychosis service. The Family Peer Support Worker contributes to the planning, delivery and evaluation of family education and support programs and services which are consistent with best practice standards and evidence-based care.

Role overview:

  • Provide support to a young person’s caregivers by sharing your lived experience of being a carer and your journey.
  • Develop, source, and share strategies, resources and information that could be helpful to caregiver education, self-care, and support.
  • Support caregivers (advocating as required) to feel safe and have their needs and preferences heard.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and deliver individual support, peer led groups and other peer support projects.
  • Share your perspectives and ideas and those of other caregivers, to drive service improvement and development.
  • Represent caregivers and the Peer Support Program in wider consultations, committees, and meetings.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Cert IV in a Community services related discipline (ideally a completed Bachelors or Diploma)
  • Lived experience of supporting a young person during their first episode of psychosis and/or other significant mental health challenges
  • Willingness and ability to share your lived experience as a caregiver in a clear, safe, and purposeful way that describes the strategies and factors that have contributed to the recovery of the young person you supported
  • A broad understanding of the perspectives, experiences and impact of psychosis or significant mental illness has on families, caregivers, and significant others
  • Desirable to have experience facilitating or co-facilitating recovery or support groups
  • The ability to work autonomously, under supervision and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated effective listening, empathy and communication skills
  • Excellent negotiation, problem solving and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work to time frames, meet deadlines, and work in challenging situations.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office
  • Must be eligible to apply/currently hold a Blue Card
  • Must hold/be willing to apply for NDIS worker screening clearance
  • Current Driver’s license
