2025 Cartography/GIS Intern, Northeast Region – Exempt
-Full-time to Part-time (Minimum 16 hours and up to 40 hrs/week), Flexible start date with 3-5 month duration.
-Anticipated employment is May-September, 2025
-Location: Olympic Region – Colville, WA.

-Salary: 

Sophomore and below: $17.00/hr.
Junior: $18.00/hr.
Senior: $19.00/hr.
Graduate Students: up to $22.00/hr.
1-year Graduate program $20.00/hr.
2-year Graduate program $21.00/hr.
Higher $22.00/hr. *Housing stipend of up to $1,000/mo. may be available

Responsibilities:
The Cartographer/GIS intern will use geographic information systems (GIS), specifically ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, along with Land Resources Manager (LRM), and other technology to create work products, analyze existing data, and collect geospatial data for the profitable and sustainable harvesting of timber.

The Cartography/GIS intern reports directly to the Region GIS Analyst and will have the opportunity to learn and deploy the following tasks:

• Design, compile, maintain, and edit spatial and tabular data using: GPS data, existing DNR layers or coverages, maps, and digital photos for timber sale prospectus maps, and timber sale road plans.
• Maintain and update GIS transportation layers and attributes.
• Support Product Sales, Silviculture, Agriculture, Recreation, Ecosystem Services, Engineering, Surveying and Service Forestry.
• Plan map layouts and techniques for mapping projects
• Provides GIS guidance and assistance to NE Region Staff.  Provide system support function assistance to other employees. Through this support role, gain/demonstrate the skills to guide operations via in-person meetings, email, phone, or virtually depending on the situation.
• Manipulate both spatial and tabular data within and outside of LRM to produce computer map and tabular report products for field and regional personnel as requested.
• Use existing and gain new understanding of GPS functions and requirements to interface into GIS products. These products include, but are not limited to, timber inventory maps and tabular reports, timber sale maps utilizing the State Upland Mapping Application (SUMA), road inventory updating and tabular reports, timbersale road plan maps, right of way plat maps, specialized map requests from upper management for planning purposes, Forest Practice maps, and agriculture program maps
• Gain knowledge with the LRM system.
• Develop electronic maps and reports to assist in the planning and tracking of silvicultural activities.
• Performs other duties as needed. This includes, but is not limited to, participating in activities associated with fire suppression efforts or assisting with workloads resulting from fire suppression activities. Attend, in person, staff meetings, trainings, landscape planning, GIS/GPS training classes, safety meetings, Region meetings, cross-training in various other roles within the agency.

Required Qualifications: 

• A current student in an undergraduate or graduate program majoring in Geography, Geographic Information Science Engineering, Community Environment and Planning, Urban Planning and Sustainable Development, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management or related field.
• A licensed driver with two years of driving experience. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
• At least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
