BACKGROUND:

The International Rescue Committee is the leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Founded in 1933, the IRC is a global leader in emergency relief, rehabilitation, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement services and advocacy for those uprooted or affected by conflict and oppression. The resettlement office in Salt Lake City provides services to newly arrived refugees.

SCOPE OF WORK:

The case management program includes providing core services to new arrivals, and helping clients work towards self-sufficiency during their first 12-15 months in the U.S. in the areas of health, employment, finances, DWS, education, housing, family, and community. Casework interns work closely with the casework supervisors and caseworkers throughout their internship, assisting and learning about all aspects of the casework program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

•New arrival services: assist with airport pickup, home safety orientation, grocery shopping, apply for social security card, apply for benefits at DWS, activate EBT card, lease signing, setting up utilities, office intake, furniture delivery, bus orientations, paying bills, home safety & cleaning orientation, etc.

•Core Services: ESL & public school enrollment, cultural orientation, housing applications, transportation to appointments

•Employment search: work with individual clients to learn about their skills and prior work experience, search for jobs, create resumes, and assist with interview preparation

•Needs assessment, budgeting, action plans, home visits

•Referral and connection to community services

•File case notes, complete data entry, and participate in case staffing and staff meetings

Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS:

•Background in social work OR other related fields

•Experience working with refugees/diverse populations

•Motivated, flexible and ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage time effectively

•Strong computer skill with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

•Demonstrated ability to communicate and work as a team member in a cross-culturalenvironment

•IRC orientation and background check required

•Must be currently enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate program, or have graduated less than 6 months ago

POSISTION LOGISTICS:

•Length of Service:

oFirst Cohort: August 19th – December 6th

oSecond Cohort: September 9th – December 20th

•Compensation: This an unpaid internship

•Hours: 20-40 hours a week, in 4+ hour blocks

•Program Manager: Tee Mu, Casework Program Manager
