About the role

The role will work within the Child, Youth and Family Services team and contribute towards Catholic Care’s strategic directions to increase child and youth safety and wellbeing, strengthening families and communities. The focus of this position is to provide effective casework outreach support to young people impacted by drugs and alcohol, to engage with external stakeholders within community including schools and health, providing education and prevention services to minimise risk to youth and to strengthen communities. It is a very hands-on job, that at times can be challenging but massively rewarding.
Our Case Workers have high levels of compassion, empathy, patience, and tolerance. A humanistic approach and a fun personality are a must, but you also need to be able to think fast, deliver practical and emotional support and be solution focused. We want clients to feel safe and supportive, but to also have a positive experience with our service and organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing case management support that is consistent with trauma informed practices.
  • Conducting assessments, developing case plans in consultation with each client, conducting regular case plan reviews specific to the needs of the individual.
  • Ensure appropriate referrals are made to address risk factors such as mental health, drugs and alcohol and other contributors.
  • Liaising/working closely with internal and external services/agencies involved in the care and support of individual clients to ensure the best outcomes possible.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date documentation of all client interactions.
  • Working across multiple sites including our drop-in centre and assisting with the operating of the drop in centre with the team.
  • Providing outreach support programs and groupwork in schools.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant area eg. Social Work, Social science, Welfare, Psychology, or Drugs & Alcohol and/ or demonstrated relevant industry experience.
  • Experience of extensive knowledge of trauma-informed, strengths based casework interventions.
  • Ability to understand the needs of young people and engage with this client group.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development and factors contributing to drug and alcohol misuse.
  • Demonstrated networking and advocacy skills with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage crisis situations and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Sound knowledge of the needs of vulnerable young people and effective strategies that bring change.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation and the programs and agency’s legal responsibilities in relation to reporting children and young people at risk of significant harm.
  • Knowledge of housing, domestic violence, child protection, youth development, and mental health (non-clinical) and working with families.
  • Experience developing and delivering group work.
