Northumbrian Water

About the role

We’re looking for a small team of Catchment Monitoring Advisors to work within the Thriving
Catchments programme.

Thriving Catchments is an exciting new initiative which takes an innovative approach to working
in river catchments. The initiative represents a strategic partnership between Northumbrian
Water and The Rivers Trust, and builds on the Catchment Based Approach.

In Thriving Catchments, we’re creating a collaborative, cross-sector approach with a big
ambition for the future. We’re working in partnership with local rivers and wildlife trusts and
with land managers to identify catchment and nature-based solutions, with a particular focus on
nutrients, to improve river water quality and waterbody ecological status.

We are seeking highly motivated, reliable and creative individuals to work within Thriving
Catchments. You’ll be responsible for monitoring our river catchments and providing data and
evidence to support the programme.

Your work will be principally field based, and will include undertaking catchment walkovers and
surveys, gathering information on issues and problems, managing simple and complex monitoring
equipment, collecting samples, meeting stakeholders and partners, and discussing findings with
others to support the programme. You may also need to interact with members of the public when
you are out an about on the job.

Lone working may be required, but for the majority of the time we envisage you working
alongside a team member to investigate and gather evidence of water quality issues and
improvements.

About you

You’ll be approachable and engaging, with excellent communication skills. You’ll have a keen
interest in the environment and rivers and have a questioning mindset. You’ll be happy to work
outdoors in all weather conditions, potentially in some remote areas, and you’ll enjoy working
as part of a team.

We need you to be proactive in managing your own workload. The role will require travelling
around Northumbrian Water’s operating area, so you’ll need a full driving licence.

You should have some prior experience of working in the environment, and an understanding of
environmental monitoring, but full training will be given. We need you to be IT literate and
familiar with Microsoft Office packages, as some reporting and written communication will be
required.

Here at Northumbrian Water, we embrace and value Diversity, Inclusion and Equity
which means bringing your full self to work. We encourage and welcome all applications, as we
believe and strive to be an equal opportunity employer committed in having a diverse community
represented within all our teams, structures, and organisation.

Interviews to be held 17th and 18th April
