Additional Information
Lowering Organic Waste – Methane (“LOW-Methane”): At COP28, incubated through the Subnational Climate Action Leaders Exchange (SCALE) a coalition of international partners launched Lowering Organic Waste Methane (LOW-Methane). LOW-Methane is an initiative to jumpstart a dramatic scale-up of global action to cut methane emissions from the waste sector in support of the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) target of a 30% reduction of methane emissions by 2030. The CCAC Secretariat, in line with its role in providing secretariat services to the Global Methane Pledge, has been asked to coordinate LOW-M To support implementation of the GMP the ambition of LOW-Methane is to deliver at least 1 million metric tons of annual waste sector methane reductions well before 2030, unlocking over $10 billion in public and private investment, and working with select subnational jurisdictions and their national government counterparts. The initiative aims to do so by fostering alignment of member organisations’ efforts to support government priorities, directing resources towards key commitments, addressing barriers and gaps, and supporting actions with the greatest benefits for the climate and the communities impacted. Implementing well-known methane reduction measures would avoid nearly 0.3°C of global heating by the 2040s. LOW-Methane will achieve its goals by: (1) identifying high-priority opportunities to cut methane emissions from waste, through mapping and aligning subnational and national priorities, projects and resources to support LOW-Methane pathways, and (2) mobilising partners to support the delivery of those opportunities and actions, unlocking finance, data, policy and technical capacity. LOW-Methane partners comprise global leadership and expertise in the fields of climate change, finance, emissions and waste data, public policy and solid waste management. More than 25 organisations have declared interest in joining the coalition, committing to share expertise and resources to support LOW-Methane and accelerate the progress of the Global Methane Pledge. The fields of data and finance have been identified as the most in need of alignment and innovative collaboration, through two working groups: the LOW-Methane Finance Solutions Team and the LOW-Methane Data Solutions Team.
