Offer Description
The successful candidate will be affected to a noble gases mass spectrometry platform and will mainly work on a one-of-a-kind mass spectrometer, which possesses a record low sensitivity and measurement limits for xenon and krypton isotopes. His/Her core missions will be to calibrate, to implement analysis protocols and to apply those developments for the analysis of Kr and/or Xe in various samples.
The apparatus, a RIS-ToF (Resonant Ionisation Spectrometry – Time-of-Flight), differ from common noble gases mass spectrometers by its selective Kr or Xe ionization mode, using an UV laser beam. This resonant ionization scheme enable to drastically reduce mass interference and therefore to lower the detection limit to only few thousands to even few hundreds atoms. The ultimate goal would be to qualify the RIS-ToF spectrometer for the analysis of Space exploration missions’ samples (Hayabusa 2, Osiris-REX…).
The post-doc main tasks will be to:
• perfect the acquisition and treatment of ToF spectra,
• refine the noble gases extraction, purification, and analysis protocols, as well as the RIS-ToF operational start-up protocol,
• develop methods of errors determination and in consequence to try adapting the protocols to reduce the measurement uncertainties, notably concerning isotopic ratios,
• realize measurements on samples of interest, most particularly meteorites.
Additionally the post-doc will have the freedom to prospect on other possible applications of this equipment with unique capabilities.
Moreover, depending on the progress on the main missions and on the post-doc’s wishes, she/he will be welcome to participate on the other ongoing research projects of the host research team (Thermo-Desorption Spectrometry, tritium concentration measurement via its daughter isotope 3He, paleotemperatures, etc.).
The LP2i-Bordeaux is an interdisciplinary lab gathering studies at the crossing of Physics, Biology and Chemistry, with the shared peculiarity to base the research upon beams (ions, particles, lasers). LP2i-Bordeaux is a joint research lab between the University of Bordeaux and the CNRS/IN2P3 (National Centre for Scientific Research/ National Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics).
The Noble Gases team (2 researchers, 1 research engineer) manages, maintains, and operates the PIAGARA noble gases mass spectrometry platform. The latter was recently reinstalled in a brand new building.
The team takes advantage of the favourable LP2i environment, specialized on experimental complex setups developments, to realize its own instrumental tailor-made equipment (laser heating setup https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0068858 ; RIS-ToF https://doi.org/10.1039/c5ja00423c ) dedicated to noble gases analyses down to ultra-traces levels. These developments allow the realization of singular research studies, most notably in Geosciences (e.g. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-022-04710-4 ; https://doi.org/10.1007/s10040-019-01944-x ) and to measure the diffusion of noble gases in materials (e.g. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jnucmat.2022.154191 ).

Eligibility criteria
We are looking for a person having skills amongst the following domains: analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, beam treatment and management (laser, ions), physics or chemistry data analysis. The covered scientific fields are very diverse (instrumentation, automated data acquisition and treatment, error determination, laser, analytical chemistry, ultra-high vacuum, noble gas mass spectrometry…) and this has to be taken as a positive challenge for curious minds! Obviously, the candidates are encouraged to apply for the position even though they have knowledge and experience for only a few of the listed skills. The selected candidate will be assisted by the PIAGARA team and the support staff of the lab to further the project.
