The Center Supervisor of the USC First Generation Plus Success Center is a full-time professional staff member, reporting to the Student Equity & Inclusion Programs Director, Trojan Success Initiatives. The Center Supervisor serves the needs of first generation, undocumented, former foster youth, and transfer students on a variety of committees, collaborative projects, and University events. The Center Supervisor is tasked with developing student-centered programming, outreach, relationship-building, and advocating for and mentoring students accessing the space. Because the department is uniquely positioned as a bridge between the Los Angeles/Southern California communities and the campus, the Center Supervisor is also tasked with relationship-building with off-campus community members and other organizations for the purpose of student engagement, development, and referrals.

The USC First Generation Plus Success Center is housed under Student Equity & Inclusion Programs (SEIP) in Student Life. The mission of the FG+SC is to create a culture of belonging and inclusion that will facilitate the transition of USC first-generation, undocumented, former foster youth, and transfer students into college life.The First Generation Plus Success Center serves as a resource hub for current first-generation, undocumented, transfer, and former foster youth students as they navigate campus. We encourage and empower the USC community to embrace and celebrate the multiplicity of identities the first-generation college student population holds.

Student Equity & Inclusion Programs (SEIP)

USC Student Equity & Inclusion Programs is a cluster of student development centers and initiatives within Student Life that offer student support services and programs that focus on intersectionality, sense of belonging, and well-being. Student Equity & Inclusion Programs consists of Asian Pacific American Student Services, Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs, First Generation Plus Success Center, Gender Equity Programs, JEDI Peer Education, La CASA, LGBTQ+ Student Center, Middle Eastern North African Student Lounge, Native American Pasifika Lounge, Student Basic Needs, and the Veterans Resource Center. SEIP facilitates dialogue, community-building, and leads campus-wide equity and inclusion initiatives that impact the student experience.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Initiate, plan, and organize programs supporting first-generation, undocumented, transfer, and former foster youth students’ sense of belonging, intersectional identity-development, education, and well-being.
  • Plan and implement large-scale FG+SC events, such as Welcome Experience programming and orientation sessions.
  • Manage annual hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of student staff and volunteers within the Center to accomplish programs, projects, and operation of the Center.
  • Develop and conduct professional development and cultural competency trainings around diversity and inclusion for students and staff.
  • Administer program operations and administrative functions such as hiring, budget, marketing, trainings, outreach, assessment, and strategic planning.
  • Serve as a key resource for resolution on university diversity and inclusion-related events and incidents.
  • Interface with student, staff, faculty, and external contacts for committee work or information exchange regarding program services or content.
  • Stay informed of development in the field through data gathering, assessment, benchmarking, and networking with peer institutions and professional associations.
  • Provide resource referrals to staff, student workers, volunteers, graduate students, and campus constituents regarding issues or topics such as bias and discrimination incidents, students in crisis, mental health concerns, and overall campus climate.
  • Engage with Undergraduate Student Government and Graduate Student Government.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of large-scale SEIP and university events, such as Welcome Experience programming, History/Heritage Month programming, and cultural graduations.
  • Assist with developing and implementing assessments on campus climate, sense of belonging, and program improvements (progress/annual reports, statistical summaries).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and growth of the center.
  • Strengthen and maintain the mission-focused goals and learning outcomes for the center and its programs.
  • Serve as a resource for and collaborator with individual student organizations and campus programming entities.
  • Continue existing and build new collaborative relationships with campus and off-campus partners to maximize resources and effectively meet student needs.
  • Assist with marketing and increasing the social media presence of the department as well as engaging with students through social media platforms.
  • Serve as an advocate and information resource to undocumented, former foster youth, transfer and first generation students.
  • Provide information about the FG+SC at orientation, prospective student fairs, and other internal/external events.

This position will include periodic extended work hours and weekend assignments. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
  • Minimum Experience: 2 years
  • Minimum Field of Expertise: Student personnel administration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or a related field.
  • 2-4 years of experience in the field of student development or relevant experience managing student programs in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theory and national research, issues, and current events regarding college students, particularly marginalized populations.
  • Demonstrated depth of knowledge regarding diversity and intersecting identities of  first-generation, undocumented, transfer, and former foster youth student populations.
  • The ability to translate knowledge and theory into programming and resources designed to support students’ retention and success.
  • Strong advising and program development skills.
  • Proven presentation and communication skills.
  • Strong background in assessment and evaluation.
  • Student staff supervision experience a plus.

Compensation: The annual base salary range for this position is $60,928.25 – $67,059.24. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
