JOB DESCRIPTION

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Here’s your chance to apply your technical skills at CERN, the world’s leading particle physics laboratory, where innovation and discovery go hand in hand.

In this dual-role, you will play a crucial part in the integration of critical systems and complex mechanical equipment within CERN’s iconic Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments and across extensive fixed-target research areas.

  • As a CAD Mechanical Designer/Integrator, you will be responsible for studying and designing the integration of components to ensure that each element fits perfectly into both current and future infrastructure.
  • As an On-Site Works Coordinator, you will be in charge of coordinating contractor activities, ensure respective safety aspects, and be directly involved in the implementation of equipment and ensuring smooth operations within the experimental areas.

Joining the Design and Coordination (DC) section of the Experimental Areas (EA) Group in the Beams Department (BE), you’ll help bring CERN’s experiments to life by ensuring that each component of these complex systems fits seamlessly into our present and future infrastructure.

Join us to push the boundaries of what’s possible in a complex, multidisciplinary environment where your work will leave a mark on science and society.

Functions

You will join the team responsible for supporting and coordinating installation activities across experimental areas and maintaining beamline equipment. Your role will encompass design, installation, maintenance, and modification of key facilities, both at equipment and general infrastructure level.

More specifically, you will:

  • Conduct integration studies for experimental area infrastructures and design beamline equipment using CATIA V5, creating 3D models and 2D drawings in accordance with ISO-GPS standards;
  • Utilize CERN’s Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system to ensure all design work is accurately stored and traceable;
  • Coordinate, supervise, and monitor installation activities in beamline and experimental areas;
  • Perform installation studies for various physics experiment components;
  • Coordinate CAD design activities within the design office, supervising a team of contractors;
  • Operate and maintain a laser scanner for integration work including post-processing of scans, and a 3D printer;
  • Produce technical documentation to support design and installation processes.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanics or a related field.

ISO GPS certifications would be an advantage

Experience:

Demonstrated experience in:

  • Designing mechanical and/or electro-mechanical devices: 3D-modelling based on CAD software;
  • Integration: using CAD models from multi-disciplinary equipment and service teams;
  • Operating laser scanners and performing post processing treatment;
  • Preparation of 2D execution drawings in compliance with ISO-GPS standards;
  • Coordinating installation activities.

Knowledge of the following fields will be considered an asset:

  • working with CATIA V5 and with a PLM (Product Lifecycle Management); 2D drafting with BricsCAD®;
  • Coordination and safety aspects in the context of Works and Services Supervision (WSS),
  • operating a 3D printer.

Technical competencies:

  • Integration of mechanical systems;
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment;
  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models;
  • Design and analysis of mechanical structures;
  • Design and construction of machines.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships;
  • Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting Taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen;
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: being willing to work on different projects simultaneously;
  • Solving Problems: producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements;
  • Communicating Effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.

Language skills:

Ability to speak and write English in professional contexts and the willingness to learn French.
