Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Chinese Language Translation and Text Processing Section (CTTS), Conference Management Service (CMS), Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) in Vienna. CMS operates administratively under the Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The Chief of Section reports to the Chief of the Conference Management Service. Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Chief of Section will be responsible for the following duties: • Manage the translation, revision and related activities of the Chinese Translation Section to ensure prompt delivery of documents of appropriate quality and quantity. • Oversee the day-to-day and long-term planning of work in the light of workload projections, including the appropriate recruitment of temporary staff. • Supervise, monitor and evaluate the performance of all regular and temporary staff in the Section. • Make recommendations to the Chief of Service on policy matters relating to the Section, including appointment, promotion and training. • Adjudicate between competing demands on the Section’s services, where necessary. • Liaise with other sections and units to ensure optimum coordination. • Encourage the introduction and use of modern technologies with a view of enhancing the efficiency of document workflow, as appropriate. • Act as final arbiter on matters of language and terminology. • Serve on examination boards for the recruitment of translators. • Lead team members efforts to collect and analyse data and provide insight to identify trends or patterns for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Ensure that everyone can discover, access, integrate and share the data they need. • Perform other work-related duties, as required.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Candidates for this position must have passed the combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors in Chinese or any United Nations language competitive examination in Chinese held before 2017.

Work Experience
A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading or production editing and/or in the provision of language or language-related services within a multilingual setting is required. Experience in the use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools is required. Significant language-related management experience in international, regional or national institutions is desirable. Experience in data analytics or related areas is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, a perfect command of Chinese (as assessed in the relevant Competitive Examination), which must be the candidate’s main language, is required. An excellent knowledge of English (as assessed in the relevant Competitive Examination) is required. Knowledge of one other official language is desirable. NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ” Knowledge of” equals a rating of ” confident” in two of the four areas.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment and a competency-based interview.
